Thought it wasn't a bad performance from Anorthosis considering they were playing at the San Siro. By far the biggest game in the club's history, and I was impressed they weren't over-awed by the occasion. Ketsbaia set his team up as he would normally, and tried to play his own game. The defending was systematic and organized, and the keeper again showed his class.

Proud moment for me especially to see Lukasz Sosin (No.9) spearhead the attack at the San Siro. Thought he held the ball up quite well. At the end Inter had too much attacking threat for them, and a class delivery by Maicon made all the difference.

  2. More from the SSN from Teamtalk:

Barton told Sky Sports News: "In some people's minds, I will never be forgiven, and so be it.

"But at the end of the day, I know I am living my life clean, I am living my life in the right way.

"All I am interested in is repaying people's faith who have shown that faith in me.

"At the end of the day, I have stepped out of line a few times now, but nothing before has ever been as serious as it was in the summer when I had to go to jail, in front of courts and really know what life is all about.

"It has taken that. Some people, they never get that far down the line. It has taken that for me to sit up and take notice.

"I have probably had more chances than anyone deserves, I am the first to admit that.

"I have never thought, 'Oh well, I will get more chances because I play football', that's not the case.

"I have been fortunate enough that people have given me more chances. Hopefully, I won't need any more.

"But I am a human being and there will be times when people criticise things I do.

"But for me, the time now is to draw a line under the talking side of things and start letting my performances and my behaviour off the field take care of itself."

Barton acknowledges many of his problems have had alcohol at their root, and he revealed he has not had a drink for 10 months.

He is well aware he cannot change the past, but is determined to repay the faith of those who stood by him in his hour of need.

The 26-year-old said: "Hindsight is a wonderful thing and if you could go back and change the past, there would be people out there who would go back and change a lot of things.

"We have all got skeletons in the cupboard and things that we regret at some stage in my life and for me, I have probably got a few more things than the average kind of person.

"For me, it is a case of sort of drawing a line under that. I am not asking people in any way, shape or form to say, 'Oh, let's forgive and forget' because I can't condone the things I have done.

"The things I have have been involved in and mixed up in cannot be condoned. For me, it is a case of putting everything to bed.

"I have got my mind set on repaying a lot of people that I have let down, a lot of people who will be disappointed in the things I have done.

"In hindsight, if I could go back and change those things, I would.

"I can't, so all I can do from this day forward is try to do the right things, try to live my life clean, try to do things that will rectify the mistakes I have made in the past.

"At this moment in time, I am 10 months sober now and I am trying to do that."

Feels like I've said this before (probably have...) but those are very sensible and honest comments from someone who appears to know and can acknowledge his own problems. Let's hope he comes back into some form on the pitch and keeps his head down off it.

The words sound right but if he's been sober for 10 months his actions in his brief appearance against Aersenal still looked like the same old story. Heavy reckless challenge followed by a smirk of self-satisfaction. He needs to get his head down and provide some end product rather than be content to be a wrecking ball at Newcastle.

Nothing wrong with his behaviour at Arsenal IMO. I don't want him to become a bottling fanny, he may very well go in hard to some challenges. As long as he don't f*** up again outside of the pitch, I want him to be the very same Barton on it.

Agreed. Don't think he went over the top at all. The adrenaline from finally playing a game of football after prison must have been at levels most of us will never experience in our lifetimes. Sort of like coming back from the dead. He's saying all the right things at the minute, and I hope he follows through with his words. Welcome back Joe Barton.

  3. There always seems to be a much better atmosphere midweek under the floodlights. Dunno why as people are always much drunker on a Saturday so you would think it would the weekend games that gave the best atmospheres.

I've noticed that as well. Love night games meself like

  4. Great entertainment, great atmosphere, shocking refereeing.

Given 8  Made a couple of world class saves

f*** me!!! that save he made from Ireland's volley was a thing of absolute beauty!!! that save should be used as an example when training young keepers. one of the best I have ever seen

Indeed, deserved to be a match winning save. Sublime volley from Ireland, just got the right curve on it, but Given did extremely well to get to it.

Up there with his saves against Philips and Gudjohnsen as one of his best saves for the club.

no chance was it as good as either of those

Watch it again. Outstanding timing and technique. I would say it was a more difficult save to make than the Philips one, as he had to get across his goaline and down in a flash. Also, to kill the ball's wicked spin and velocity was spectacular as it is.

  5. “Maybe people think about him completely differently and forget about the ability he has got. Joey’s one of the best finishers at the club believe it or not.” JK

Goals from midfield, yes you heard that right, we have a goal scoring midfielder who has now had a huge amount of training behind him unlike last season

I would throw him in on Saturday at the expense of Butt, however, i firmly believe it will unfortunately be for Guthrie!

If this means that Guthrie is brought on gradually then I don't mind it to be honest. We're in for a long and tough season ahead, and he will get his fair share of games. The important thing is that a youngster like him isn't in the firing line for the boo boys. Butt's experience is vital to us despite his dwindling performances, and Barton has a lot to prove to the faithful.

Cracking atmosphere up in Milburn Level 7, could hear a decent amount of noise coming from the Gallowgate and "Leazes Corner" throughout the second half as well...has been a long while since the place has been rocking like that.

Obviously the usual "geordie injustice" helped to play a part but did those there notice how the increased crowd support lifted the players? For those that still believe they need something to spur them onto supporting the team...please take tonight as an example of how we can help the team raise their game.

Similarly, for the likes of Ameobi, see how the crowd's attitude towards you improves tenfold when you actually bother to break into a sweat.

Cracking game, cracking atmosphere - let's try and keep it going for Villa.

  7. Beye-4 Unlucky to be sent off but maybe shouldnt have been so rash in going in for the tackle.

What was "rash" about this tackle? Robinho was through into the box and only had Given to beat. Beye would never have caught him. The only chance to prevent Robinho from scoring was to try to sneak the ball away from Robinho with this kind of tackle - which he did with great perfection. Only that Styles got his decision wrong as usual.

Yes but even thought he slightly touched the ball there was every chance it could have gone wrong, so thats why im calling it rash.

So he should have just made no effort and let Robinho score then?

Yup, and some would've still gone after Beye saying he bottled it, and is a cunt mercenary not fit to lace the boots of Nattrass

  8. Ireland bossed their whole game, terrific performance from him.

Nice through ball for Ireland but other than that, I hope Robinho is red faced at having to climb out of Geremi's f***ing pocket.

    and Bassong's at times

  9. A decent result in the circumstances, but one that keeps the pressure well & truly on because I will be surprised if the side gets anything at the Stadium of S---e...this is Sunderland's best chance to beat us at their place for years, and I think they will do it, probably by 2 goals ; Cisse will be the difference because his pace will really trouble Taylor & Coloccini. They are a better all-round side than us, even if they haven't got as many class players...but then, Hull also fall into that category at the moment.

Only Spurs' appalling form is keeping us off the bottom, and they have the players to improve dramatically.

Jeez, bit of a negative view on the whole thing don't you think? Aye, we've been rubbish and need to pick up points. But performances are improving and players are returning from injury - the only way is up!

    :indi:

No, I DON'T think its a 'negative view on things'...I think it sums up the situation.

Sadly, the 'only way' ISN'T up - its also down, and the Derby game is an unlikely place for any recovery to start, unfortunately...

You will learn to avoid excessive exuberance when you have been a supporter of NUFC as long as I have.

We are where we are because we deserve to be - the table doesn't lie, and we have been playing relegation football.

jeez mate, we're not even down yet

I'd like to point out one thing, and I don't know if it has been mentioned in this thread but....

Full credit to JFK and Chris Hughton for keeping the team the way it was after Beye had received his marching orders. He could have taken a striker off and added to the defence, but I was delighted to see him order a change in shape and tactics, and keep Martins and Ameobi on, which ultimately paid off. Had he taken one of them off, City would have cruised it.

Geremi is as much a defender as he is a midfielder tbh, so moving him down to RB and Martins to LW is pretty much the same as substituting a forward for a defender.

in terms of positioning of course. But Martins is still a lethal finisher, and Geremi is still an expert at supplying dangerous balls into the box. One of the two qualities may have gone had a defender come on. The point is he kept the personnel, even if he changed the shape and formation.

  11. One fluked goal because the ball pinged around the penalty area and landed in front of Ameobi and all of a sudden he's redeemed himself.

He's still hopeless 98% of the time and should be nowhere near a starting place, or even the bench for that matter. :(

    w0Rd!

can't believe this s***! No one's saying he redeemed himself. No one's saying he's now world class!!! Of course, he still has a long way to go if he's ever to convince anyone that he can hack it at this level consistently. But what he did last night was score a goal that raised the roof around the park. He delivered on that one occasion when Newcastle, team and fans felt hard done by a pathetic refereeing decision, and it gave us hope and momentum in the game. are you telling me you didn't celebrate the goal because it pinged around the box and he fluffed his shot?

IMO the story is a load of bullshit. I don't think Keegan would have a case anyway.

If it IS true, then yes, he's a parasite in my eyes. If it's not true, then I urge him and his legal team to sue the news source.

I think Keegan did the club no favors walking out the way he did, but I don't think he would stoop this low personally.
