  1. If Colback had gone off injured for Tiote instead, we'd still have struggled in the same ways as when Anita went off.

Not quite to the same extent but yes considering how s*** Tiote is. It's more of a indictment of how this happens pretty much every time Anita is subbed than anything.

I can't remember one single game when he was subbed off and the team was still in control.

Anita had had far more bad games for us than he has good and other than West Ham at the end of last season (his highlight as an NUFC player) I can't really remember us controlling many games, definitely not under Carver and very rarely under Pardew as we generally played on the back foot under him.

I reckon we were in control yesterday for the majority of the game. Except after his injury.

Has Colback ever been subbed off? Maybe once if I recall. It's definitely an issue though. He is NOT the magnificent Geordie captain many make him out to be. He's a competent PL midfielder, but I don't want him in the team at the expense of someone better, or when he's off form.

  3. It's not about that and it never has been

Anita positions himself properly off the ball and makes himself away available for the pass constantly, Colback doesn't and slows down the build up where as Anita gets it to where it needs to go quickly instead dawdling on the ball like Colback does allowing the opposition to get into position.

Shock and horror as soon as Anita goes off we struggle to hold on to the ball for more than 5 passes, which has happened almost everytime he's been subbed off in his Newcastle career.

I have said before i don't want to see them both together, but there's more to it than where they pass the ball.

    This. End of, really.

Also, from the stats TCD posted, Anita barely crosses the halfway line. Colback found himself in advanced positions a lot more often. How some still don't get the difference between the two when it comes to the sideways passing is beyond me. The heat maps illustrate it perfectly.

  4. Big Sam was on BeIn over the weekend and he brought up a very interesting matter. He said that most coaches in the PL, if not all, rely tremendously on statistical analysis of players' performances in matches. He said that it was a double-edge sword in that sometimes it can be used as an excuse to drop a player if his stats weren't good enough. On the other hand, players with good stats get upset if they're dropped, and the boss has to use man-management skills to explain that it was a tactical decision etc..

Could it be that players, who are obviously aware of this, try to use it to their advantage? Making these meaningless sideways passes surely increases a player's passing accuracy? I'm not accusing Colback of doing it. He may or may not be. He certainly has shown that he's willing to fight for the cause, but maybe this over-analysis of statistics is giving some players something to hide behind.

  5. As somebody said above, he keeps us ticking over with short no nonsense passing. I would also agree that he, in reality, is no Pirlo, but we know what he does and he does it week in week out, therefore giving a sense of security and consistency in a position that in time will get an updgrade. He gives 110% which for me is decent enough, his ability is what it is and until we sign an upgrade give the lad a break...FFS!

He doesn't keep us ticking over at all IMO. He makes some great interceptions, and bursts forward into space where he has the chance to do something good. Then he fucks it all up by suddenly stopping, and giving a meaningless pointless sideways pass. Sometimes sideways passes are important for keeping possession and frustrating opponents. They are also sometimes completely cowardly when they slow down an attack that could potentially yield a goal scoring opportunity. If he's to improve, he needs to learn when to pass sideways, and when to take a chance and make a threatening pass forward.

Comparing him with Anita isn't clever at all because Anita actually has the ability and speed of thought to make the one touch first-time pass to a player better positioned than him. Colback needs too many touches, and needs to improve this side of his game.

The last ditch block showed high levels of fitness and concentration at the end of a match when the rest of the team was out on its arse. He single handedly prevented us from losing, and for that he earns high praise.

  6. This board is negative as f***. He had a decent game today.

 He was at worst average today, and yet we are still gifted with continuous discussion of how poor a player he is.

Different day, same story on this forum. They spend their time mocking him for his white skin (I am sure if his pigmentation was of a different ethnicity, they would say nowt about that) and his speech impediment, but they reserve their ire mostly for his biggest disability of all, his nationality.

If his name was Jaques Le Col Baque, with Ugandan origin  they would be far more tolerable. For evidence of this, see their rampant and sinister defence of Vernon Anita, by far one of the most pointless players the premier league has ever seen, but due to nefarious reasons outlined earlier, they will remorselessly defend him until the cows come home.

    This is weapons-grade retardation.

I reckon if he was called Lin-Con Eemp you'd reckon he was a f***ing mint poster and not at all a complete knuckle dragging fuckwit.

Once again, anti English xenephobia on display. I notice no one has had the grace or dignity to offer an opposition to my post, rather just decide they are offended for no justifiable reason whatsoever.

Accusing people of racism for no good reason is stupid and irresponsible and shows you up as an instigating WUM. Your posts on this matter don't merit any reasonable debate.

    Weapons grade unfounded horse plop.

  8. It's all about opinions. Mine is that players like Colback rarely catch the eye whilst  on the ball. It's not often that they inspire us, or we marvel at their contribution (in a "Christ I'm couldn't do that" kind of way). But you sharp notice the difference if nobody is doing that role: harrying (Gateshead/Morpeth Harrier-ing?? ) hassling, doing the running, closing down, narrowing the options, tackling. David Batty used to get a lot of stick (self included) for his sideways movement/slowing down of attacking momentum,  but had recognition from those who know, including Sir BR. (Soldiers are reliable, artists are not). I personally rate Colback more highly. IMO he  consistently puts in disciplined performances, and 'goes that extra mile' (or 2.5km...) and I include willingness to take a card for the team within a sense of discipline and commitment. I think he'll be a regular starter, and  reckon he'll add five goals, even from his deep role.

f*** me. Recognizing what Colback is supposed to bring to the team despite his lack of real quality is one thing, and comparing him to David Batty is quite another. If Colback was anywhere near Batty's quality then he SHOULD be the first name on the team sheet. He isn't half the player though.

Seeing as he plays for NUFC I would love nothing more than for him to improve to that level however.

  9. Love seeing Anita dropping in between the CBs to get some attacks moved and started. Not something I normally would like, but I liked the different approach.

This was his exact role at Ajax before we signed him, and when he didn't play LB. He seems really comfortable doing it and generally uses the ball quite well. Passing was a bit wayward on occasion today but it's nice to see we're doing something apart from the willo-hoof.

  10. looks good, my only concern is, did we loan him to too low a level

Back in Jan so it's ok, loan him out to Championship club by then

I would just let him fill his boots at that level this season. He's bound to go through a rough patch of form and he needs to be at a club that will persist with him.

Then next year he can go to the Championship and see how it goes there.

If he is a level headed lad he'll keep his feet on the ground and not get carried away thinking he's made it. To be honest he does look a better overall player than the likes of Campbell and Chopra who never made the grade.

  11. Saw two low crosses into the box, haven't seen that at Newcastle for like a decade

 so true. Last one I remember was Debuchy's goal against the spackems. And even that may have been a shot to begin with.

  12. Well done SMC sending this guy out. If only for the player's sake. Obviously hope NUFC benefits one way or another, but sitting around rotting on the bench at that age is soul destroying let alone career destroying.

  13. “People are probably are wondering, ‘Can they play in the same team?’ I think you saw in the last 20 minutes against Gladbach that yes they can."

McClaren on Gini Jong. I like the sound of that..

It's quotes like this that make me warm to McClaren. I can only imagine Pardew's thoughts on the same issue. He'd be petrified playing the two of them together.

"sa'ing sa'ing fret science and front foot, stop me if I'm getting too technical"

  14. I'd start him and Mbemba solely to get them up to speed for future games. The sooner they're used to league the better.

Makes sense IMO. Southampton are a very good side, but they're also missing a few players at the back and in midfield. They've also been traveling away this week. Potentially the best time to play them at home.

I wouldn't make much of the travelling, the travel here is probably longer than the trip to Arnham, offset by playing slightly more competitive football they should be that bit sharper.

    Good point.
