Has anyone from the club elaborated on why our defenders couldn't play on the pitch? 

I'm pretty sure all of them train on artifical pitches regularly enough so what's the deal with this one?

Might have something to do with Cabella and Riviere getting injured so early on, and didn't want to risk our vulnerable defence? No idea why you'd not want to risk Willo though tbh.

Lascelles is meant to be good in the air. I hope Mbemba also has a commanding leap. I do think having a CB who isn't much use at set pieces is a bit pointless.

Our main problem in recent years has been the delivery on set pieces, as well as how the players position themselves rather than having big men in the box who can jump.

Taylor also offers more of a goal threat/ability to cause chaos in the opposition box than Williamson ever could.

If McClaren and/or our coaching staff have anything about them, they'll realize that Abeid offers a lot more than both Colback and Anita, provided he trains well and shows them, obviously.

I really hope this knacker isn't club captain for the season. Literally offers nothing in the way of talent, purpose or personality. Colo with all his faults at least had some kind of stature in the game.

The thought of Colback captaining NUFC is tragic.

I heard on Thursday that it was a done deal according to Moncur.He also said he didn't know much about the Austin deal.More worrying was that apparently all players left out of the US tour aren't featuring in McClarens plans.Probably a load of horse pap

Surely if we're going after this guy, McClaren also has plans to address the service situation? He'll be almost useless without it (as is Cisse to a certain extent).

He is really. Shows absolutely nothing, but since it's Ajax he came from and not Sunderland it gets overlooked.  Offers zero just like Colback.  It's a nightmare pairing in the middle.

They might offer nothing when paired together in the same lineup. They do contribute far more with different players around them though. Especially Anita who can move the ball quicker in midfield than anyone else in our squad.

I'd rather have a farty, overweight, geriatric Ali Dia playing at CB than this impostor.

No way is Shawcross overrated like. Not having that. I think he'd get into a Spurs team alongside Vertonghen and Liverpool with Skrtel. He'd be our most important signing of the summer if we got him. This point is moot though since he'd not take a sideways step.

This. He's a very solid defender in the sense that he commits very few individual errors. He may not have all the ability in the world, but what he can do, he does very well.

I miss him so much it hurts sometimes.
