The airport patter is horrific but I thought that was quite decent at the time tbf [emoji38] lovely how things worked out after mind!

Agreed, it was funny but as is often the case with all things Mackem it was short lived and we've been laughing since

With us I think the way that we are looking to structure deals is what’s delaying things. We have the money to spend, but don’t want to spunk a huge amount in one window so are looking to structure deals over a number of years to comply with FFP. Clubs aren’t going to want to sell their best players if they’re getting £10m now and therefore unable to use any fee received on their side immediately.

I am confident we will get some top players in. Ashworth is clearly no mug and you’ve got think, a lot of players, agent and coaches etc will be on holiday at the minute.

I thought how you pay is irrelevant to FFP? So spreading payments over 5 years or one lump sum is considered one and the same when calculating profit/loss?

I’d rather wait and get the right signings and I’ll never be one of these supporters that’s shouting “biggest club in the world” phrases or anything like that.

We’ve got ahelluva manager in howe at the moment who will drive us forward so I trust him. If we end up starting next season with same squad - I personally won’t be worried.

I'm happy to wait, absolutely, I was patient in January and I'll be patient again as I trust the ownership and the manager

I do think no further signings would be worrying, though I'd still like to look at the bigger picture and see it as better than Ashley but no signings would mean something seriously has gone wrong somewhere. Though I'm absolutely certain that won't be the case and we will make signings.

Of course. But if we start with the same first XI but improve our back-up with big potential, that will represent improvement.Spend £60 million on one superstar who might flop, or 3 £20milion prospects? I know which I'd prefer, for now.

    Ideally we'll get both.

I agree, in that scenario getting 3 prospects is better but that poster was suggesting he wouldn't be too fussed if we went with the squad as it is, which suggests no further signings, that's ludicrous

As nice as it would be to get new faces in, I’d be relaxed if we started next season with this squad as I feel it would be right move rather than paying silly prices.

Carve out a reputation next few windows that we won’t be bent over.

I'm relaxed about the situation and our squad is better now than it was 12 months ago but not improving the squad further would be ludicrous and unacceptable

Standing still is effectively going backwards, moreso considering we still have a lot of improving to do

Look at City, won the league yet have already signed Haaland/Alvarez and being linked with others (Cucurella/Phillips)

The mere suggestion they'd refuse an ownership like ours, with its obvious issues, is utterly laughable. They'd be on cloud 9. Its very easy to say 'no' when it isn't your club.

I do wonder that if our new owners replicated or even exceeded running Newcastle as badly as Ashley did, the cries about human rights would be as loud?

Their reaction when PIF had withdrawn in July 2020 was quite telling

They were over the moon, laughing at us, delighted that we missed out on such a takeover.

  7. Targett is a sensible and solid signing. Whilst the appeal of Lodi or a more attacking LB is obvious, sticking to a solid option for a reasonable fee means you can spend bigger elsewhere on the pitch, where we definitely need to improve.

Well, yes I am saying otherwise - do you think that a 40m loss at a football club is the result of paying tea ladies and stewards too much?  Bournemouth's wage bill was huge for the time - over 30m - Howe didn't spend much at all on transfers.  Again, that doesn't detract from the achievement - just as spending 90m in January doesn't detract from the phenomenal job he's done at NUFC.

The always excellent Swiss Ramble explains it far better than I can:

    https://swissramble.blogspot.com/2016/05/bournemouth-welcome-to-pleasuredome.html

That article looks at the more recent seasons but the work Howe did in keeping them in League 2 and then getting them promoted is THE achievement and he did it by spending next to nothing

Maybe they spent more in The Championship but to downplay the overall achievement seems a bit daft imo

  9. 10 minutes ago, TheBrownBottle said:

They made a loss of nearly 40m in their promotion season - and bear in mind that this was nearly a decade ago.  Like I said, a fortune.  At the time, clubs in the second division were allowed losses of 6m per season.

I don't know much about Bournemouth's financial situation but Howe himself had next to nothing to spend is what I understood was the case, are you saying otherwise?

  10. 5 minutes ago, TheBrownBottle said:

Eddie Howe is an excellent football manager - but context is required re getting Bournemouth into the PL.  Yes, Bournemouth is an oversized Tory retirement village with zero history of footballing success - but Howe's Bournemouth spent a FORTUNE getting promoted.  It wasn't a plucky underdog story - they were fined millions by the Football League for their sizeable breach of financial fair play rules.

Of course, this doesn't detract from Howe's ability - look at how much Bruce spunked in the second division at Villa to finish lower midtable - but Bournemouth's rise wasn't a Wimbledon-esque fairytale.  Their billionaire owner chucked a lot of money in to get that promotion.

I thought he kept them up and then got them promoted to League by spending next to nothing?

Not sure if that's tongue in cheek, we could spend 4x that tbh, but I think the only reason we are getting him is because we are gambling on him coming good. There might have been plenty of big clubs sniffing around, but maybe not prepared to spend that much on a prospect. I'm just going off what I've seen on Youtube, but I am more than happy to spend that much, he looks the real deal.

Just one caveat though, I haven't seen him shooting from distance so I suppose there might be a question mark over how well he strikes the ball.

His last goal was a well struck shot from outside the box

Yep I think we have a few fall back options. Not worried at all. Badiashile looks a bit more rash than botman but quicker and more exciting. The fact he can play as a RCB makes me think he could still be on the radar, Botman or not.

           Botman/Ake    Badiashile

               (Burn)               (Schar)

Then Lascelles/Dummett or Fernandez as the 5th squad CB.

Could see us doing that in 3 windows with the 3rd window replacing the squad CB, buying someone young or pushing Schar/Burn down the ladder.

I thought Badiashile was a LCB?

Massive risk this mind spending that much on someone so unproven, especially when our attacking players need such an upgrade. Fingers crossed he’s the real deal and hits the ground running, don’t see him having much time to settle in as such as we will need him to start pretty much straight away.

Only if we don't make any other attacking signings

Signing him first doesn't mean we aren't going to sign other attackers

  14. Us getting into the CL in the next 3-4 years is not a guarantee so it would be totally understandable that he picks Milan

They are very much likely to be in the CL for the next set of years and he's young enough to join us later if our project achieves what it sets out to achieve

Are we all not getting ahead of ourselves? We don't know the criteria for fair value, it won't just be league placings.

At the time I'm sure it was said (might have been reports rather than anything official) that it's based on similar level clubs, quite how that is worked out is anyones guess

Evertons covid losses are a complete mockery of the allowance given.

It's crazy how they've gotten away with claiming double the losses of any other club

Even if we do break FFP what are they going to do? Everton have clearly already broken it and there has been no consequence at all and they're continuing to spend. If they can just ignore it then why can't we? You can't pick and choose who and when you apply your bullshit regulations without being ripped apart in the courts.

Everton have apparently worked with them as they suffered Covid losses (for which the numbers seem ludicrous) but yeah they could hit us with points deductions and fines

Though if we took the matter to the courts there's no chance it holds up

I think the club are going with the less confrontational approach to begin with, if the PL continue to play silly buggers then it might be a case of "rolling our sleeves up"
