Don't see how Tomkins or the kid from Sheff U are any different to signing somebody from abroad. Not proven in the Prem, in Tomkins case has actively failed.
-
We dont have time. The idea would surely be to throw him into the mixer from the off. So who do we sign then? Not sure who is out there would be guarenteed to settle straight away, apart from maybe Samba. Go with that strand of thinking we'd probably end up signing somebody like James Collins or Roger Johnson, who people will champion as 'Prem ready' players but who are actually just shite.
-
Tbf, you can say that it's best to avoid Ligue 1 for centre halves but it's just as likely we could sign somebody already playing in England who would be a complete dud for us, or somebody from Spain or Italy. I don't think there is much continuity or correlation with the success of players coming from each league, it nearly always depends on the individual and how suited they are in terms of age, ability, style of play, mentality etc.

Gallas took to the Prem very quickly didn't he? Wasn't an established French international when they signed him. Edit: too late

Koscielny was nowhere near the best in Ligue 1. He had only just came up from Ligue 2. Struggled a lot last year but has been very good this season tbf.

Distin?

Agree, though he's a jack of more than one trade which is probably the only reason we're sniffing around....however he's decidedly average at both Centre back and left full back. Exactly. He's a slight upgrade on both Perch and Raylor in their current positions, that's about it. Just gives us more depth of average defenders who shit a brick in possession.

Sessegnon is guarenteed to get fed up of mackemland. Inevitable.

I'd be very disappointed with Ridgewell. He certainly wouldn't solve our problem of having poor footballing fullbacks.
-
If it was a choice between £10 million on Samba, or getting say Cissokho for £6 million and a lesser CB like Tomkins too then I'd go for the latter. I'm desperate for us to have a decent fullback.

Not in the Carling Cup, that rule only stands for FA Cup. They need to win it to qualify.

For all people say Short backs his managers healthily and they've got loads of money to spend it's a bit of a myth. All the money they spent in the summer came from the sales of Henderson and Bent. They still sell their best players when the offer is good. Hell they were willing to loan out their best striker because they got an offer that was financially unprecidented for a loan deal. They haven't made sunk cost investment on players since they got promoted and gave Keane loads to spend to settle them in the league. Since then they've been ran as a business and they've tightened ship even more recently. Their wage costs are a huge percentage of the turnover and they're having to trim accordingly.

The pound coin explains active and inactive, Dave.

They've got no money. Say what you want about investment but they're run exactly the same way we are, sell to buy.
-
i'm not, bizzarely, even less so after todays game. Same.

Ironic as ever. Taking the crap into the new year, I see So you actually think there's pertinence in unfavourably comparing our manager (who has us 7th) with Steve fucking Bruce? You're a waste of bandwidth. FFS Man.
