I think it's the players around him aren't as good. I might be off here, but I think it's the opposite. Portugal know Ronaldo is their main man and they play like it. Argentina are caught in two minds whether to play as a team with Di Maria, Aguero, Dybala etc, or just utilise Messi. Messi shouldn't have to carry Argentina, but they act like he should without admitting it and end up doing fuck all. I think you're bang on about Portugal but don't agree about Argentina. I think their only tactic is for Messi to run the game from deep but it's too easy to defend against because they've not had the sense to play any proper wide men and stretch the play. Easier with Ronaldo because the other 9 just have to not concede and try to give him the ball near the box. I feel if Argentina actually copy that Messi + 9 defenders, they'd be a success!
