As someone said above it might have just been reported by media, either way it is almost always par for the course for any club that is heading in a more ambitious direction. You generally wouldnt just bring a player on double the wage of the rest of the squad, it would be done more gradual than that. Alot of these footballers have fragile egos

If this is the case and they really are going for one big name marquee type signing the list of options would be fairly small right now, unless you count the likes of Zapata as a big name of course. It would be someone whos north of 30 and doesnt start week in week out imo so Bale, PEA (please no), Navas and so on.

Exactly this. The only question being is would they ask say Crystal Palace for the same amount they wanted from us? Because I expect there will be a club willing to pay close enough to the £10m they wanted as well, hopefully we match whatever the best offer is. Getting him in for 6 months could be key if he performs well and enjoys his time here we would be in pole position to get a quality player/big upgrade on what we have for no fee in the summer when his contract is up.
