The Quarter Finals: Croatia, Argentina, Morocco, and France through

The Dutch need to wake up now - too conservative by half -
Football supporter politics is worse than student politics - it is more delusional and more corrupt, and is of even less importance. More akin to social club boards than anything. I do find it hilarious that they think their voices will be listened to, mind, no matter how much arse-licking they do. They’ll find themselves speaking to PIF even less often than they managed to with Ashley.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Argentina and Brazil both have managers who haven’t been managing in Europe. The game generally has moved away from that sort of passivity -

Ho’way the cloggies It’s absolutely the least tragic part of that country’s break-up, but Yugoslavia would have won a major trophy or two had it remained unified. Certainly think they would have in the ‘90s -

I had them to win the whole thing, but I do think Brazil’s arrogance (particularly over the last couple of decades) makes them a fun side to watch losing. The support seem even more entitled than the average talkSHITE caller -

Pens in penalty shootouts don’t count - but he’s a weapon either way -

I could understand if he was third penalty taker - they can be a pressure one as it’s the earliest you can lose. But fifth is ludicrous -
It doesn’t resolve the issue of what happens while it is being rebuilt. It won’t be much quicker than a knockdown rebuild.

Me and most of my mates wore this top more than the B&W one during this period, I think for two reasons: 1) ‘electric blue’ just looks mint on a football top 2) most of us got the B&W top first - and the ‘first generation’ ASICS kits would click to buggery. Those who grumble about the Castore quality don’t know they’re born
-
They’re hosting it now - no need for pretence anymore. They couldn’t give a flying one

Is he still shouting at random people on Twitter?

I’ve never quite understood why a deal can’t be done in terms of building a new ground just behind the current SJP - and still keeping the ground’s name - while converting the current site into a park to make up for the loss elsewhere I know people talk about the history, but you’d only be moving a matter of yards - and besides, not one of those stands at SJP has borne witness to a major trophy win. There is no chance really of converting the current ground into a different arrangement to make a bigger stadium, as any knockdown - rebuild would take too long, and the club would need to play elsewhere. One of the drawbacks of being a one-club city is the lack of other stadia which can be used temporarily - the only ground which could be used is the SOS, and both sets of fans ultimately wouldn’t go for it (which is daft when you really think about it - but who said football support was rational?)
-
You’re probably right - but it would be Sporting all the way from me. League football pales next to the excitement of European knockouts - and for me the entire purpose of doing well in the league is European qualification
-
Yeah - though of course, those European games were snookered by the greed of the Halls and Shepherds, bumping the prices up and making ST holders buy all three group game tickets at the same time (from memory, my tickets cost c.£100). Mind you, the enthusiasm for European football waned after a season or two - it become just another cup match, only often against opponents folks didn’t care about. Hopefully, 15 years of almost no European nights will bring that enthusiasm back!

Yeah, me too re KK / BR eras. The attendances would dip slightly as the away allocation was fixed back then - the ground was still all-season ticket and it was hard to get in. That’s why the standard of opposition / importance of game doesn’t seem to impact attendance during that period - it’s really a sign of which clubs have the best away support. So Leicester, Derby, Spurs (their away lot were always flaky - this was very much a mid-table era for Spurs), Blackburn and Fulham are the only games where the crowd is (just) under the 51k mark

Crazier stuff has happened (see 1966)

Yeah, likewise, I was smiling through most of that

That felt more like the end of Rocky IV to me

I feel like I know a celebrity - I know who the bloke is. He used to post on the TF board on FB - he declared on there he was signed in as ‘Mag in Peace’. This was when that knacker wanted to fly a banner over Sunderland when that poor little laddie was dying
