It’s a toss up between spending a lot of money on players (which we have done) and then having to flog one last minute. Or reigning in the spending and not having as a good a squad as we do now. What would you have preferred? The real issue was Bruno’s release clause, they didn’t want to sell prized assets if Bruno was to go too. Therefore they had to wait until the last week. That isn’t their fault. Now that release clause has expired we’re in a much better position. You have to look at the full picture.

Planned poorly!? There is no golden bullet. Buying unproven youth to sell on to make profit was the plan. It’s a very good plan to keep the proven talent. Without that plan Bruno/ Gordon/ Isak would have been sold. Sorry but it is anything but poor planning. What did you want the club to do?
-
Hmmm yeah that’s shocking defending. Had to show him down the wing rather than let him cut inside, then was slow once he did cut inside. Hopefully just a one off and he isn’t always like that.
-
Not saying they do or they don’t but for my ignorance, do these transfers ever pay off for PL clubs? (Excluding la liga clubs).
-
I’m just shocked people think we will get money for these players. It’s going to cost us about £4M to get rid of Lewis and Hayden. Dubs will go for free. There is no chance we are getting £9M for Ashby. Some of these takes on getting money offloading players is mental.
-
They haven’t managed to offload Hayden or Lewis for free for three years now. What makes you think they’re going to be able to offload them this window at all never mind for a nominal fee?
-
Really!? It would cost us money to offload Hayden and Lewis.

But qualifying for Europe next season wouldn’t affect FFP over the last three years. Not qualifying for Europe next season is next seasons FFP issue.
-
This is exactly what it is and it’s quite obvious to see it. Feeling sorry for everyone else having a meltdown over a FFP workaround.
-
He gave him 45 mins against Man City in the league cup there. He didn’t look comfortable. So Howe has clearly considered it before.
-
Similar meltdown when the Gordon rumours were kicking around. We need a striker that can hold up the ball who we can bring on with 15 mins left if we’re trying to protect a result. Last season at times we couldn’t hold on to the ball towards the end of a game. E.g. PSG away. DCL is perfect for that role. He won’t be starting for us and he has nothing to do with Minteh leaving. Minteh leaving is to get profit in this year. It’s not that bad, stop crying.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens this transfer window with our defenders. We currently have 12 defenders on our books and 6 of those defenders only have one year left on their contract. Those are: Trippier- sell if an offer comes in? Schar- offer a year extension? Lascelles- release after this season? Krafth- try and sell now? Burn- offer a year extension Lewis- try and loan/ sell With defenders with longer deals that leaves: Ashby Livramento Botman Kelly Targett Hall Ashby is untested at premier league level and Targett is probably unwanted. After this season that would leave: Livramento Botman Kelly Hall Burn Schar Meaning we need to sign 2 or 3 new defenders either this season or next. It’ll be interesting to see how many get purchased this window in comparison to next.

Wow I’m pleasantly surprised at that. I’m very ignorant when it comes to injuries and for some reason thought he’d only be exercising his knee in Octoberish if he’s not back until December!
-
Your guess is as good as anyone’s
-
Yes, you’re correct here. It’s just a change in accounting estimate.
-
Yeah you’re right. You would amortise all up front costs to the transfer: Agent fees Sign on fee Legal fees For a free transfer these can easily be between £5M-£10M.
-
The reality is it’s difficulty to break it for one year only. If you sign 4 expensive players on high wages for 5 years, unless you sold players each of those years for profit or increased revenue drastically you’d be looking at a 6 point deduction each year. Rather than just a single 6 points deduction. It then defeats the point in trying to do it.

No it’s not silent in FRS102. A balance sheet is at the end of a day. A general ledger has daily periods. The accounting policy clearly states that it is spread over the life of the contract. If you weren’t doing it daily you could argue annual recognition is spreading it over the lifetime of the contract but we both know this isn’t the case. Depending on the amount of PPE or intangibles and whether they are material you may get away with doing it monthly. I work with mainly listed entities though and companies with £100m + turnover. These are done daily. The risk of an error being material is too high to do monthly. Smaller businesses that don’t require audits or with a relatively small amount of PPE/ IA’s can do it monthly as it will be immaterial. Given the main cost in the accounts is player costs (transfers and wages) there isn’t a chance that it is done monthly. There is no auditor in the world that would sign off on that. The risk of material misstatement is too high. I have done quite a few football DD deals over the last few years. As a chartered accountant I can’t say who as it will breach confidentiality and it is now all done daily. Perhaps it’s changed since 20 years ago? If you are a chartered accountant I’m surprised you’re telling people your clients. Quick way to get struck off?
-
Football clubs do not amortise transfer fees monthly. It is daily. Sorry. Sorry but you’re just wrong here. Even if you were correct and it was monthly you round to the nearest month. Therefore if a player was signed on 30 June 2024, the months charge would be recognised in July 2024 given the majority of the first contractual month falls in July 2024. But in practice this isn’t how it works. It is done daily.
-
But the Tottenham game was the main fixture in a much bigger stadium. That was the game we would have agreed to play the first team as part of the payment for travelling that way. The match today wouldn’t have had an agreement in terms of which players to play.
-
No, I’m telling you as a chartered accountant. The standard dictates it needs to be calculated daily. It’s not a faff.
-
No it’s calculated daily
-
Why is everyone not thinking we can’t spend before 1 July!? Any transfer fee and wages are amortised over the length of the contract. If you sign a player the last day of June on a 5 year contract there is minimal expense for the year ended 30 June 2024. It doesn’t affect the buying side. The only reason you’d set up a contract to complete on 1 July is if the selling club wanted the profit in the latter period.

Wonder if everyone that was criticising Howe for not playing more of the kids when we had loads of injuries still thinks the same…
-
Yeah agree. His posts about City since he left them look a bit bitter. Hope he puts it behind him. The reserves compared to the u18’s is a big step up. He hasn’t been able to score in the reserve league this season. The step up from the reserves to top 8 premier league football is even bigger. I think fans will have to be very patient to see him/ if we ever see him. I think the local media have bigged him up a bit given he was a Man City youngster. Not sure how much that will help him because our fan base is now under the impression he’s amazing. We aren’t the most patient bunch. If a lower league club is willing to take him on loan next season that may be his best route.
