    Growing Pains

Ultimately we don't actually demand a team that tries, we demand a team that wins. This is the third time in my lifetime that I've seen us come from absolutely nowhere and have completely unsustainable growth year on year almost overnight. This is fine if you accept the unsustainable part is very important and don't throw your toys out the pram when it inevitably happens. Two out of three times the fans have gotten let's say "restless" at the very first sign of adversity, with only Keegan suddenly leaving no doubt preventing a full house. In the Howe meteoric rise era we've had 15 years of aggressive, deliberate owner sabotage to fix all while the bigger teams get bigger and rules are invented to keep us down and yet we regularly compete with Europe's finest and even win a trophy. Taking even one step back and it's very obvious this is the best position we've been in as a club and as a team for nearly 30 years and it still isn't enough for some. Countless years in the bottom half (or worse) gives zero perspective apparently. Growing pains is a great title btw as it's exactly where we are as a club but many haven't got the patience for things like gradual growth.
  2. That's the most screenshotable table I can find. The Too Confusing; Didn't Understand is that our defensive numbers ON PAPER are top 5 in the league.
  3. We're 5th in the league for xGC if anyone cares about such things.
  4. This season has been littered with the big teams dropping points to the little teams. It really isn't just us and it feels very convenient that people ignore it. Man City's last two league games are draws against West Ham and Forest as an example and bottom of the table all season Wolves taking 7 points from Liverpool, Villa and Arsenal recently as another.
  5. In March we've beaten an extremely in form Man Utd, Chelsea away for only the second time in the PL, completely matched, if not outplayed, Barcelona for 3 halves in the last 16 of the Champions League and 6 of our players have been called up for England. Booing isn't enough for this lot. It's time for the bedsheets.
  6. Read the .com match report if you think the reaction had nothing to do with Robson. Plenty of "I was saying boo-urns" energy here.
  7. I was there as well so no need to thrown the superfan card around. Robson was clearly hurt and disappointed by the actions of the fans that day which is enough for me. We'll never be happy and nothing will ever be good enough.
  8. Again, this isn't about whether he should have been sacked or not. It's about the treatment of him (and the players) by the fans. Booed off for only finishing 5th and only getting to the semi final of a European Cup was something that actually happened and there's a reason why it came to mind today.
  9. "Amazing, incredible, unbelievable. Three days after the semi-final of a European Cup competition and with a top four league place up for grabs, Newcastle are booed by a section of their own supporters and then handed a colossal vote of no confidence in the manager and players by a collective walkout at the final whistle." From .com. "Hugo Viana and Laurent Robert were singled out for special treatment by the disgruntled fans - which Speed found particularly upsetting. "I don't think I have ever experienced anything like that before," said Speed. "We couldn't believe that everybody thought it was all over and that we're out of it now. "As far as Hugo being booed onto the pitch, I have never known that happen. He's a 20-year-old from another country and a great lad. "I felt awful for him because no-one should have to go through that. It was embarrassing - and unfair. "Everybody has their agenda on Laurent but he's part of the team and if you are booing him you're booing us." Like I said, some things never change. Embarrassing behaviour from embarrassing people.
  10. It's got nothing to do with that. It's about a decent, respectable man who walked into a joke of a club that was fighting relegation who then dragged us up the league and had numerous great league finishes and European cup runs only to find himself being booed and hounded out when we didn't keep progressing at the unsustainable rate we had been. Sound familiar?
  11. "Sir Bobby said: "I can't stop the reaction of the crowd. They are what they are. We thanked the ones who stayed behind. "But I have to remind one or two people that this club has played 28 times in Europe over the last two seasons. A few seem to have forgotten that. The expectation here is so high." "Five of our big players did not play. All five would have played and you have to remember that. My policy has not been to talk about the injuries but we've lost first-team regulars." "We'll need to have resolve and commitment to qualify for the Champions League now. My message to everyone is to get your head up and your chin up. "There are still two games to play. In football you always have a chance and you have to believe that.". If you know, you know. Some things never change.
  12. I'm definitely of the opinion that he's taken us as far as he can but not because he's holding us back, but rather because we're holding him back. Both as a club and (a section of) the fan base. He'll be one of the best managers in the world eventually but chances are it'll be for someone else because the club is a fucking mess and the alleged fans who are desperate for him to go deserve the Pardew and Bruce types that they were perfectly happy to sit through because it scratched their "I fucking love being miserable" itch. He needs to run for his life and never look back.
  13. They're not good yellow cards/fouls, they're absolute liability ones.
  14. Delap has more yellow cards than PL goals. 13 to 12.
  15. Since the start of the 22/23 season, we've got 239 points and Man Utd have got 231. Nowt in it apart from about a billion pound spent and twice that on wages. (The gap might be bigger if anyone can be arsed to work out Howe's NUFC Vs Man Utd) Wrong thread but you get the idea.
  16. In the last 3 seasons we've drawn 23 games out of 149 in all competitions. With the better defence In 22/23 we drew 15 out of 48. Those extra points from turning stupid, avoidable defeats like the Everton and Brentford games into draws would really add up over a season.
  17. The world cup ends on the 19th July which will be about a month before the first PL game so we cannot just sit and do nothing for 6 weeks of the window. We did that last season and have hopefully learned a valuable lesson from it.
  18. Aye, none of this "there was a World Cup on, nobody buys players during a World Cup" bollocks. It'll be 3 years this summer since we've had a transfer window that hasn't been either a massive fuck up or a complete non-event. We've stood still for far too long for a club that wants to be the best in the world in 4 years time.
  19. 3 out of the 16 used were fighting relegation under Bruce years ago. It's incredible how far Howe has taken them.
  20. In tonights squad only Hall, Tonali and maybe Tino are good enough for the back end of the Champions League. We're still playing people who were fighting relegation under Bruce and people like Pope, Ramsdale, Barnes etc all got relegated before we signed them. Us doing this well is a massive victory in itself. Give him the right players and he'll have us regularly winning these games.
  21. The conversation was about the pros and cons of being in a lesser European competition. I offered a pro and now wish I hadn't bothered.
  22. We were 12th going into this game. It's an obvious problem he himself has acknowledged.
  23. Howe needs to learn how to manage 2 games a week so getting into the Europa or the Conference would probably be hugely beneficial for him and therefore us. The first game of the week being against a team we can't pronounce would be better than Barcelona etc in terms of walking before we can run.
  24. Apologies for invoking the "I" word on such a happy day but I reckon we'd comfortably be 3rd if Isak (or his replacement) was fit and firing this season. A 15-20 goal striker would definitely have gained us 10-12 points so far. Bruno - 9 Woltemate - 7 Gordon - 5 Barnes - 5 We're lucky Bruno has stepped up like the captain he is.
  25. Beating Man Utd and Chelsea (away FFS) in the last two league games is particularly pleasing. We're a few players away from this being normal.
