Rightly being given a huge amount of credit for his tactical masterclass yesterday (even Slot seemed to acknowledge in his post-match press conference that Howe outsmarted him) but also needs to be given a huge amount of credit for how he managed the build-up to the game. Evidently he learned big lessons from the final two years ago and kept the players more isolated from the noise around the final, including staying in a hotel further away from Wembley - several of the players mentioned how important that was in their interviews. He also opted not to reveal our hand against Liverpool in the PL match a couple of weeks ago, and has been drilling the lads on set pieces specifically for this game for two weeks. None of this didn't came at the expense of a very solid away win at West Ham in the immediate run up to the final. If we do get into the CL next season this bodes very well for us. Management of big games at the elite level is probably one of the hardest skills to acquire for a coach, especially one who like Howe who started off at the bottom of the pyramid. We knew he had the tactical nous, but now we know he can do this I’m feeling even better about the future with him.
