The United manager’s need for a right-back is now bordering on the desperate following the injuries at Middlesbrough to first Stephen Carr and then Peter Ramage. Allardyce has a team of scouts second to none, but he knows that time is not on his side as he bids to find a right- back before the transfer window closes at midnight on Friday. Quite simply, Big Sam is finding that there are not many quality defenders up for grabs and he will be rueing missing out on Juliano Belletti after the Brazilian joined Chelsea from Barcelona last week. Chelsea are clearly not happy with Glen Johnson and the former West Ham right-back could be a target, although Portsmouth want to take him back to Fratton Park where he had a loan spell. Luckily for Allardyce, he does have other options at right-back, including Geremi, Steven Taylor and Nobby Solano, but he would only want any of this trio to be a short-term measure. Solano has been left out of the United squad for the last two matches with Aston Villa and Middlesbrough as he eyes a move to London to be with his family. Now Allardyce could well tell the little Peruvian that he has to stay – at least until the next transfer window in January. Allardyce told me last week that he expected the £2m signing of Abdoulaye Faye from Bolton Wanderers to be his last signing of the current window. But this transfer has dragged on, with neither Bolton nor United explaining the reasons why. Allardyce told me today: “To tell the truth, while I was looking to get in one more defender before Friday, I am now looking to get another in too. “Because of the injury situation, I do not feel as though I can let anyone go. Stephen Carr has a straight forward hamstring injury, but it will still keep him out for four to six weeks. “As far as Peter Ramage is concerned, we still don’t know the extent of his injury – but it is not looking good. “It could be a tear of the cruciate ligament or a cartilage injury, or even both, and it could be that he will need a trip to Dr Steadman’s clinic in America.” Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
