We have to stop playing two defensive midfielders if we play 433.

Would rather play 4-4-2 but for the sake of the thread, when all fit it would probably be (as a front 6):

              Butt

                        Emre

          Barton

Martins            N'Zogbia

            Viduka

But that would mean dropping Owen (best striker) and dropping Milner (undeserved), Thats why I want us to play 4-4-2.

Agree with that, that'd be the best 6 for a typical 4-3-3.

But we have to find a way to incorporate Owen when he's fit, for the majority of games at least.

One potential solution could be that at home especially against average teams we drop both our defensive midfielders and play our best 6 lined up as below:

           Barton      Emre

Milner                               Zoggy

           Owen       Martins

Don't see the need for a specialist DM (i.e. Butt/ Geremi) coz I consider both Bartona nd Emre to be aggressive players, who will not shirk tackles and who can hold their own against most midfield duo. This is off course provided we can play fluent football (hopefully we can with Barton's and Emre's creativity) without needing an explicit target man (i.e Viduka). The lack of a strong centre forward should not be a problem if we play crosses into the box as both Owen and Martins are excellent with headers (refer Martin's salmon jump and Owen's immaculate timing).

I really have outdone myself this time with such a thorough analysis   :frantic:

I reckon Sam is desperate to shore up our famously awful defence

He can get us into the habit of not leaking goals by playing two defensive midfielders and gardually switch to a more aggresive formation as the team developes

Personally I am no fan of 433 - there never seems to be any width

Agree but Sam's views on our 'leaky' defence might result in him going for an overkill by lining up two defensive midfielders (3 if he plays Smith as a right midfielder coz his contribution attacking wise is very limited when played on the right).

The mf three should be a holding DM,  an allround midfielder with good passing skills and license to move up and an attaking midfielder who should generate tempo and attack the box with late runs.

i don't agree with that. you can easily play with two defensive midfielders with great success. what it requires though is an attacking midfielder who is actually capable of attacking, and apparently we don't have that at the moment.

having said that, i agree with all of you prefferring 4-4-2 anytime!

I'm more than happy to see Sam continuing like this until Christmas, even beyond if we keep keeping clean sheets and winning more than we lose. Obviously I'm excited at the prospect of Barton and Enrique coming in and Zogs playing further forward. But the fact is this method has got us to 6th in the table, with a team full of players who are still getting used to eachother and the way Sam wants them to play. Even if Barton didn't come in I think this system would start being even more successful once the players get used to it.

And also Sam has shown that just because we start the match with 3 defensive mids that doesn't mean we'll finish the match like this. Shutting the other team out should be the first priority at the moment, and I'm happy to see Sam recognising this. We'd all like to see a Keegan style cavalier approach but realistically that is not an option now.

I think Sam has gone with 2 DMs because we have had Carr and Zoggy at right back and left back. Zoggy is inexperienced in this position and carr is just crap. When our back four settles into Beye Cacapa Roz and Enrique I imagine two of the midfield three will be given more license to get forward. These two players willprobably be Smith and Barton.

By the way, when Martins came on in the second half, over the weekend, did we switch to a 4-3-3 with Martins, Owen and Shola upfront?

So which three would be in the midfield & upfront then?

I find it hard leaving out Butt/Faye or Geremi in a midfield four let alone having a midfield three. We seem to play our better football in a 4.4.2 formation in anyways. What about when Duff comes back too?

I think it would be Geremi, Smith and Barton in the midfield three. As for the front three only God knows. That is going to be complicated because we don't know how Sam would use Owen in this formation. I would love to see Owen, Viduka and Martins upfront but not sure if it would work. If it did though we would be so exciting to watch. Hope Sam figures out a way to make it happen.

Smith ruins that middle 3.

i agree - smith doesn't look like he belongs in a midfield of three central players.

i'd play:

              butt/faye

        barton      emre/geremi

Seriously this lark has to stop it is limiting our options all over the place. Sam's safety first  I only want to see away to the big 4 and never in other games.

....and who be they?

What other choices have we had recently, though?

I know someone's already mentioned this, but that's surely where the discussion begins and ends.

Let's see what he does when he has one of Barton/Emre back and when Enrique is ready to take over from N'Zogbia on a permanent basis at left-back. At the minute he doesn't seem to be spoilt for choice and I'm fairly sure Allardyce knows what players to play in a 4-3-3...

               butt/faye

only problem there is that if the combination is Barton/Butt/Geremi, we have to rely completely on Barton to pass the ball.

Just had a brain wave! We should sign back Viana in January!

Put him in the Lampard role in a 433, tell him he's got no defensive responsibilities so he can mince out of as many 50-50s in UEFA Cup semis as he wants and we'll be laughing! Sam could get Campo to give him a character reference so he knew he wouldn't be mismanaged this time.

I know he was a total flop but he also did one of the best passes I've seen from an nufc player in recent years. It was a through ball to Dyer in a cup match against Everton, attacking the Gallowgate. Can't remember if we scored from it (probably not) but from where I was, more than 100 yards away in the Leazes, it was pure Rui Costa.

Exactly! Howay man Sam, get him in. We all thought he was horse plop when in fact he was just ahead of his time... will undoubtedly prove to be the final piece of Sam's jigsaw.

i think he could turn Marcelino into a defensive rock, as well. Fuck off Rozenhal, the finger is back!
