Tackles from behind

Sorry for the shit MS paint skills here, but if player A is running with the ball is said direction, player b comes in with a ferocious slide tackle, wins the ball and it goes off in direction c, is it fair or a foul? Cheers

It seems that in the modern game if you put in a tackle which is deemed as aggressive, even if you win the ball you'll make a foul and probably get a card.

Exactly. Emre's two-footed lunge last season was a brilliant tackle. Won the ball cleanly and didn't even touch the opponent, but since it looked wild, he got a yellow card iirc...

If you win the ball cleanly without causing any danger to an opponent, it's OK, whether the tackle comes from.

That may be the rule, but the interpretation is different. Seen some beautifully-timed challenges from behind that the ref has blown up for.

Most referees don't like tackles from behind.

In your diagram, it would be fine to make a challenge in that situation, although a lot can depend on the referree's position and the opponent's reaction to the tackle, how he goes down etc.

There was a situation a few seasons ago when Jermaine Jenas made a challenge from behind on Gilberto and was sent off, despite making contact with the ball before the man, because of the way he caught Gilberto after the challenge and the way he went down.

From behaind or with the sole first - Red Card

Even if you win the ball it can be a foul. if you, for example, brutal floor the player.

But there's perfectly reasonable tackles where both players are essentially stationary and the tackle comes in from behind, but reaching round the player with the ball. Almost zero chance of injury, but will still get penalised.

I would like to see one of those.

Directly from behind it is (or should be) a free kick and even some players (like smith) gets booked

generally because they are dangerous tackles and can cause serious injuries

Provided it's a one footed tackle without the studs being raised i'd say that in this situation the tackle is ok (provided the ball is played before the man) because it seems to be from round the side of the ball carrier.  If the defender goes through the back of the ball carrier to win the ball then referees will award a free-kick.

Jenas' red was rescinded wasn't it?

Guest optimistic nit

imo if he gets the ball first and it isn't a dangerous tackle (keane on haalland, anything involving smith or scholes, that essien tackle etc...) that could seriously injure the player then its fair game.

I used to have lunch with a ref a while back, it was great as we would get his opinion after big games and incidents.

He told us, it doesn't matter if the player wins the ball with a challange, it depends on how dangerous/aggressive it looked to the ref.

I agree that if a player goes through the back of another player then that is dangerous and rightfully a free kick and a card should be awarded. My problem is the one with aggression. If you go into a tackle hard and aggressively and win the ball where is the foul there? Aggression doesn't make a bad tackle, it's whether or not you get the ball first!
