Camacho Approached About Newcastle Post - Report

José Antonio Camacho has held talks with Newcastle United about taking over from Sam Allardyce at St. James' Park after initial contact was made before Christmas.

That is the incredible claim made by Spanish sports daily Marca who believe that the current Benfica boss' next destination will be the Premier League.

According to the outlandish report, Newcastle made their interest known through Portuguese agent Jorge Mendes and unofficial talks began last month.

Mendes represents some of the biggest names in football, including José Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo, and has strong ties with clubs in England.

Camacho is said to have stated his desire to train in the Premier League and has already been tipped to take over a club before the start of the 2008-09 campaign.

Allardyce's departure has led to intense speculation about who the north east giants will approach and Camacho's name has not been mentioned until now.

After plying his trade at Espanyol and Sevilla, Camacho was handed the Spanish national team job in 1998 and he led the country to two World Cup Finals and the European Championships.

The 52-year-old is currently in his second stint in charge of Benfica after spending only a few weeks at the helm of Real Madrid, where he made 414 appearances as a player.

Newcastle have confessed that they may look abroad for their next manager, but Camacho would have to impress at the interview stage if he is to fend off competition from the likes of Kevin Keegan, Didier Deschamps and Mark Hughes.

In fact, Camacho's name does not feature in bookmakers William Hill's top 25 favourites to be given the job.

I can't always  fully participate in my threads because I have work to do, and I take a great deal of pride in always meeting my targets.  Footie comes second because work pays for footie!

Guys...sorry i cant start a new topic..yet, but i just have something get off my chest.

It is really that bad to be managing Newcastle?

Whoever names have been linked with so far, has come out and said no...baring shearer jumping with his hands up "pick me,pick me"

It is kinda hurting to see that. You cant imagine the kind of shit i am getting from my frds, even those liverfool fans. It does seems that we are really not a big club like we think we should be...really depressing to see pple keep turning us down. i am so afraid we might just end up with any tom, dick or harry and when they get fired for the poor results, the media will start the newcastle witchhunt again.

So afraid the vicious cycle might just happen.

Dun get me wrong, i love NUFC, but slowly fear is creeping in...

Fair enough, just recall seeing you start a "controversial" thread once and not appearing again until about 6 or 7 pages later.

From the La Marca:

Camacho will probably manage in England next season, 2008-2009, even though he would like to return to Spanish Football after his time at Benfica.

Everything seems to indicate that the team with which he has reached an tentative agreement with is Newcastle, if it is true the ex Spanish manager has not made any comment to that respect.  Comacho's contacts with English Football, specifically with the "magpies", were initiated before the Christmas season.

The offer from the Premier League was brought to him by his Portugese representative Jorge Mendes, well known in England and with excellent relations with English Clubs by representing managers like Jose Mourinho and players like Cristiando Ronaldo, Ricardo Carvalho and Paulo Ferreira.

Hope that helps.

There was a helicopter lurking for ages here last night, with a spotlight. He was clearly thinking of buying a flat in Heaton, and wanted a good view of the property.

Nah, Airwolf was reported lost.  Was on the local ITV news.
