Crazy to think people booed us off for finishing 5th and being semi-finalists in the UEFA Cup, mental.

I know its all relative but looking back now its hard to believe.

I do sometimes feel that we deserved everything we got afterwards.

Aye, those twats who booed us off deserved everything we've had since.

That was the beginning of the end that season. Missing out on the Champions League and finishing 5th with a tally that would be lucky to get us 9th this season. Of course it's relative, and we were relatively sh*t that season compared to what we should have done.

I just wonder if Leeds fans in 2004 when they went down, looked back at the 2001-2 season when they missed out on the top 4 to us and thought that was a good season for them...would they sh*te have imo.

Do you think the team deserved booing off though?

Course not, but it still wasn't a good season like some people have been trying to make out on here recently.

I was embarrassed that day, to be honest, by both the football on display and the actions of the crowd.

However, that season had been one colossal disappointment after the "Bowyer summer" and the subsequent Partizan debacle. People were quick to forget that Bellamy (our most important player) and Woodgate (possibly the second most) were crocked for most of the campaign, like, but obviously those two weren't the only problem. We had fucking Michael Bridges playing for us at some points man... and Ameobi played far more than he should have done that season as well....

Still doesn't hide the fact that the fans let themselves down badly at times - only 37k bothered to go to the Partizan (h) game and the Marseille (h) match wasn't even a complete sell-out either.

Oh aye, we were pretty poor that season but looking back its hard to believe how bad we've become since.

It was the 6 months after that which was more embarrasing with the Robson situation.

Selling Solano in January and using Bowyer on the right cost us 4th that season.

To be fair, Ameobi had probably his best season for us that year. Pretty sure he scored around 10 goals. Nowt special but when you look at Owen being our top scorer with 12 this season, it was by no means bad.

7-1

Yes, that was some day - Kelly & Cole both getting hat-tricks, 6-0 at half-time, new Asics strip being worn for the first time, SJH trying(painfully) to sing 'We are the Champions' along with Queen over the PA system at the end, and having a bloody good drink...an absolutely fantastic day ; I saw Jack Charlton in the corridor of the Milburn Stand just after the final whistle & even he said ' What a fabulous day!'

That's what I prefer to remember about May 9th - in 1993...

Doesn't change the fact that he was fucking bollocks and didn't work with Shearer at all like, but never mind.

Yeah like already stated that season was a HUGE anti-climax or dissapointment, whatever you want to call it.

We were on the cusp of becoming a bonafide top 3 team and the club simply couldnt be arsed to take the final step to make it so.

The football at times was extremely poor and that is why no one stayed at the end and booed them off.  The fans felt let down big style for the umpteenth time.

In fairness I think the club were being cautious (perhaps overly so although that's easy to say with hindsight) and we may have bought had we beaten Partizan. That's something we should have done with the players available. Also, pointing out we only signed Bowyer that summer is true but conveniently ignores that we splashed out £9m on Woodgate the previous January.

it is still a weird decision when you think of the financial gains CL qualification would have accrued, and that's in reference both to beating Partizan and securing 4th spot the following season. in contrast Shepherd was willing to spend £50m in 9 months a year or so later, giving the money to a shit manager with little to no prospects of making any reals gains, footballing or financial, on the back of the outlay. if there was a time to spend that kind of cash it was in that summer.

people saying we finished with such and such points total which would only get us 9th this season are missing the point. points don't exist in an objective vacuum but in context, the league table has a different dynamic every year. had the teams immediately below us garnered more points it would've suggested a different dynamic in which we too probably would've got more points.

for instance that season there was only 21 points between liverpool in 4th and everton in 17th, which suggests a tight middle of the table in which everyone was taking points off each other, preventing people from being dragged clear at the bottom or jumping clear at the top (indeed the bottom 3 sides that season all finished with the same points total). this season the gap between those positions is 40pts and the team who finished bottom, Derby, are 22 points worse-off than the side that finished bottom that season. what matters is the final position and we finished 5th which is pretty good, tho obviously disappointing to miss out on CL football.

anyway booing the fans does seem like a disgrace from where we are sitting but football is an emotional game not a rational one. we'd had high expectations and fell short so had a right to be disappointed. what gets me is using those expectations to justify the shit Robson received off the board, and his bungled sacking/replacement which must be one of the worst interventions by a top flight football board in living memory. the only reason we had such expectations instilled in us in the first place was down to SBR himself so he deserved a bit of slack. had the board really wanted to replace him they should've done it in a dignified manner, either moving him upstairs that summer or waiting till the end of the next season to do the job. instead they undermined him to the extent that they thought it would be more palatable to the fans to remove him. as a result anyone with a bit of self-respect wouldn't touch us, so we got the lousiest, most pathetic manager in the league to come and take charge.

I find it hard to look back to even the recent past, the Champions League football, even the UEFA Cup football.

You don't know what you have until it's gone. Now it's time to get behind King Kev, bring all those days back and create some new memories. We've fallen a long way, which should hopefully make it all the sweeter if we get back up there. Big word though, if.

:clap2:

I know people go on about the fact we only spent £9m in the time we actually played Champions League football...but let's not forget we spent around £35m in the 18months leading upto that, before we received the European football money.

Bobby had a net spend of less than £6 million per year, he had less to spend (net) per year than Dalglish, Gullit, Souness, Roeder and Allardyce.

Justify that.
