According to reports, Terry Venables is demanding a longer-term contract than is on offer from Newcastle.

Venables’ name rocketed to the top of the bookmakers’ favourites this week and the former England manager has since confirmed that he has held talks with The Magpies.

The club’s original shortlist of candidates to succeed Kevin Keegan looks to be dead in the water because of their associations with the divisive figure on Tyneside, Dennis Wise.

This has brought the likes of Venables and fellow member of the England managers’ alumni Glenn Hoddle to the fore as the prospect of an interim boss becomes more likely.

Venables previously performed a short-term role for Newcastle’s nearby neighbours Middlesbrough but, if fresh information is to be believed, is not prepared to head to St James’ Park in limbo.

The report claims that the rudderless club are looking to employ Venables on a match-by-match basis but he is keen for an extended deal – hence the apparent impasse.

I wonder what sort of extended deal he's after? Wouldn't expect any half decent manager to settle for less than till the end of the season tbf.

wouldnt be suprised if he is holding out for that. a game by game offer or just for a few weeks would be more hassle than it is worth, unless the pay is outrageously good.

While the club is up for sale, no manager will want the job whether it be on a short-term deal or a long-term deal. You can't expect a manager to work under such conditions. For any manager to work their magic they need a few months of working with the players and no player is ever going to fully commit to a manager appointed for a short period. This is the realty of the mess these complete idiots have placed us in. They haven't a clue.

So from reports suggesting they they wont budge on the sale price, to tonights reports that they wont give Venables a longer deal than the one they were offering. At what point will Ashley give a little and work with a potential buyer/manager to find a solution to this mess.  Surely he isnt saying to every party concerned, "take it or leave it" because surely everyone is going to leave it.
