nobby_solano
Spunked 17 million on a player and ignored the rest of the flaws of the team. What a fat turnip he is. To be fair, in those 3 transfer windows we'd spent biggish money in terms of fees and wages on a right and left back, centre back, three wingers, three central midfielders, and a big name centre forward before Owen signed. (Solano was a few hours later if we're being picky) You could give Souness a billion to spend and he'd just end up paying 10 times as much for the same dross. As much as i hate Sourness he did say he wanted Anelka and someone else for the amount Shepherd wasted on Owen. luis boa morte for £4m if my memory serves right. anelka was £7-9 from fenerbahce and ffs bought owen for £17m and luque for £10m

tmonkey
All based completely on what Souness said. The man's a liar It's not based on what he says though. We know for a fact that Souness wanted Anelka and Boa Morte, Souness practically baited Anelka as best as he could through the media. It was also clear that Souness favoured the 4-3-3 system, and wanted Anelka/Morte for that system. As for the Owen bid, that was clearly entirely Shepherd, and I can't see it being any other way. He wanted a big name, big money, long term replacement for Shearer, he wanted the best England had to offer, so he went for Rooney first and foremost, and when that failed, he used the same funds a year later to sign Owen. Souness by that time had been told Anelka was a no-go as Fenerbahce had rejected our no-doubt derisory bid. It was compeltely obvious at the time what happened here without any need for Souness' eventual confirmation of the undermining that occurred. Guest iliketoonarmy
I think the key point is not whether he wants to buy the club back, but some stupid local fans even support him to buy it back, they just never learn... this is the exact reason why no one should want shepherd even near to buying the club back, he still hasn't learn't from any of his mistakes which started the massive downfall we are now in

It's also worth reading Luque's account of how his move from Deportivo to us was "engineered". http://www.journallive.co.uk/nufc/newcastle-united-news/2007/09/21/luque-i-came-to-united-for-money-61634-19822811/
thewellander
So, Luque was saying that the club had no vision and his evidence was that they signed a tit like him who only came to Newcastle for the money?
tmonkey
So, Luque was saying that the club had no vision and his evidence was that they signed a tit like him who only came to Newcastle for the money? Whatever his reason for saying it, he's hardly been proved wrong has he. “They have a lot of potential and money to spend, but no genuine vision on how to run a club or create conditions to ensure success,” he explained. Pretty much spot on for both the Shepherd regime and the Ashley/Llambias regime.
gazzaA2
Just been having a drink with Phil Brown, and asked him if he was serious about signing Owen. Said he's got talks with him next week. I asked him how much he was asking for. £100k a week. The greedy little c*** is still asking for that kind of money - unbelieveable. Any thoughts about him learning his lesson from leaving us and trying to rebuild his career are laid bare right there. In the press conference Souness said, very smugly, 'when I walked into the Chairmans office and handed him a piece of paper with Michael Owen written on he nearly fell off his seat, but we've done it & got him, and I'm absolutely delighted. Only a few players in the world could replace Shearer and he's one of them'. Granted he might just be saying that, but it hardly looked like he was saying it through gritted teeth. Dont get me wrong I am suspicious about the Boa Morte/Anelka deals and why they didnt happen, what was Shepherd doing etc. Although I agree with Shepherd that everyone was chuffed when we signed him, we had already bought midfielders aswell to supply him. Guest
Owen was probably number 1 choice, but thinking he would be unrealistic to sign probably had Anelka as the back-up plan.

MONEY MONEY MONEY Just seen this from a reliable poster on a forum I go on Just to update: Thats what Brown said... proven England International and Wayne Bridge is on that sort of money. He'll offer a package to him 30 50 20 to make up the 100. He may already have decided to join Everton though. I said he's not welcome back at Anfield, and he said he was genuinely surprised. Brown is a decent fella actually. Said he'd learnt alot about himself through the media.
wacko
By going to a team like Hull or Stoke i think Owen will put his career as a top name in the world to sleep, in a way he has already done it he will just be confirming it. Those days are long over. He'll want as much wedge as possible and to be close to his sodding horses.
Guest wshmag
is this fuckwit for real? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1195940/Fabregas-right-Arsenal-need-dose-football-Viagra.html Cruel for Owen to be a figure of fun I was sitting in Nobu restaurant in London's Berkeley Square the other night when I spotted a clean-cut young man, with his wife and parents, taking endless phone calls throughout his meal on several phones and Blackberries. He looked serious, intense and slightly anxious. As well he might, because it was Michael Owen. Owen has become a bit of a laughing stock recently, mainly due to his poor performances as Newcastle were relegated. But I, for one, feel really sorry for the guy. Owen has been one of the deadliest finishers in the game for more than a decade - 118 goals in 216 matches for Liverpool, 16 in 35 for Real Madrid, 40 in 89 for England. And OK, his return of just 26 in 71 for Newcastle isn't as impressive. But Maradona could have played up front for that dismal shower last season and failed to hit the net very often. He's also one of the most thoroughly decent men I've encountered in football. I sat next to him at a couple of Pride of Britain awards ceremonies a few years ago and he was charming, modest, intelligent and perfectly mannered. Owen doesn't brutally carve opponents up on the pitch, hurl abuse at referees, get drunk in nightclubs, cheat on his wife, take drugs or commit the other traditional footballer bling-related offences. He is a totally professional man and thoroughly impressive role model, who should command our respect and admiration - not our mocking laughter. At the end of my meal I went over to say hello, just as he took yet another phone call. He looked up, smiled, shook my hand, then carried on talking urgently. It may have been Phil Brown from Hull, for all I know. But it looked important. 'I hope he finds a good club soon,' I said to his family. 'So do we!' they replied in unison. And so should we all. Michael Owen is one of the good guys and remains, at 30 years old, a very, very good player. what a vile, brown nosing fucking wanker. fuck off morgan yer utter, utter cunt. pinkeye
I find that impossible to believe that anyone could be so stupid to allow a clause like that into a contract. Subclause 1a, appendix 2. - Should my client complete the term of the contract at Newcastle United but, not find suitable employment immediately then the club will continue to pay full salary until such new employment is obtained. Oh, ok, that sounds fair enough.
