It's a common reaction by players to exaggerate a foul just to bring it to the ref's attention. Bassong's arm was stuck out preventing Defoe from getting past him. Defoe had turned him on the ball and was trying to run in the direction of the ball. It wasn't Bassong's body the blocked him, but the right arm holding on to him and dragging him back.
