Quite dissapointed Ranger and Vuckic are playing, was hoping to see them tomorrow.

45mins could see them get 45mins tomorrow too?

I guess, I just assumed they wouldn't be in tomorrow's squad at all?

Not sure, would make it a smallish squad, ah well, we'll see. Still Deportivo and Rangers gamse to come too, so they'll be some rotation no doubt.

43 mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (0-3): A freak own-goal puts United 3-0 up. There appeared to be no danger as the ball was played into the Gateshead box by LuaLua, but the ball hit Callum Morris' head to leave McKeown flat-footed. It's an unfortunate moment for the former Newcastle youngster.

Forgot which team he now plays fo evidently

Beardsley deployed a 4-4-1-1 with Vuckic given a free role to drift between the midfield and the attack, which at times saw the Newcastle midfield packed with 5 midfielders. There seemed to be a feeling of 'freedom' within the midfield as different players often took it turns to drift around, most noticably LuaLua who started on the right wing, but often ended up in the center or drifting towards the left flank. Inmann and McDermott took it in turns to join the attack with the other sitting deep, both showing a good understanding towards each other's position.

Both Beardsley and Stone spent the 90mins right up on the touchline, though it was Steve Stone who was the more audible of the pair, with Beardsley given little instruction throughout the game, expect for a quick gesture to 'think' towards Edmundsson.

Edmundsson showed some nice little touches and clearly has the ability to dribble, the only question I had over his game was perhaps he held on to the ball too long. However, there were times when he found himself isolated with 2-3 Gateshead players around him with no one offering support.

Ranger's goal started from Edmundson who played the ball to Vuckic who in return played it into Ranger's feet, who had his back to goal. A quick give'n'go with Vuckic saw Ranger peel away from his man and use a good burst of pace to latch on to the return ball. The Gateshead defence tried to clear, however it didn't go far with Greg McDermott charging down the clearance. His endeavour paid off as he collected the ball to the left of the 6 yard box, slotted the ball back to the oncoming Ranger who was left with a simple tap in. The goal celebration was a quick shirt changing, having had his shirt torn at the stomach early on in the game from some tight marking at the hands of Ben Clark.

A few moments later Newcastle had a corner, Vuckic swung in a left footed corner which saw Jeff Henderson charge in and just miss connecting with the ball. Henderson had a tidy game at the back, though there were times when there seemed to be a lack of communication between the back four and Alnwick (who's kicking ability came into question again with several poor clearances). Grieves, coming to the end of his 6 month contract extension to 'prove his worth' had a horrid 45mins (before being subsituted for Nzuzi with Dummett switching to CB), twice being turned by Gateshead's strikers, and at one point almost trying to get a piggyback off one of them before falling on the floor in a heap. This saw Gateshead get their first chance, though Henderson was to cover to put the ball out for a corner.

From the resulting corner Grieve was the culprit again as he failed to even attempt a challenge for the incoming corner, thankfully no one on the Gateshead side gambled on it passing Grieve.

Alnwick was called into action rarely, however he did show some bravery to collect a 50/50 ball after a clever chip over the Newcastle back line was chased down by the Gateshead #23. The collison resulted in the Gateshead player going down for a few minutes.

Interestingly, the young Newcastle players were noticably stronger, with the new Gateshead Pros often being barged off the ball and bemoaning at the ref for not being awarded freekicks. They weren't fouled, they were simply weaker than 18-20 year olds.

On the 30min mark Newcastle scored again. A long ball was played into Ranger, who controlled it with his back to goal just beyond the half way line. He played back into Vuckic's feet, who took it around two Gateshead defenders before taking it forward beating another defender before a weak shot founds its way through the keeper's legs to make it 2-0. The keeper really should have done better.

10 minutes later LuaLua showed his balance, agility and acceleration to peel away and crack a 20 yard shot that the Gateshead keeper did well to parry wide for a corner - earning a little redemption in the process.

However it was quickly undone a few minutes later when a pretty aimless deep cross from Conor Newton was turned into the net by Callum Morris for an own goal. A complete communication breakdown between the defender and the keeper. 3-0 Newcastle and the game was as good as dead once the half time whistle blew.

Half time saw some changes to the Newcastle line up:

Grieve off for Nzuzi (who came on at Left Back with Dummett switching to CB)

LuaLua off for Ameobi

Vuckic off for Donaldson

Tempo had disappeared and the game fell flat. Gateshead's #10 Craig Nelthorpe was the only player with any real energy to his game, giving Conor Newton a hard time with his quick acceleration and trickery. At one point Nelthrope, who had been giving Newton a good winding up throughout the game, got the better of Newton cutting inside from the left wing to fire out a strong right footed shot towards goal that swerved. Alnwick had it covered though and parried it out for a corner. Noticably, however, was Newton's temper as he dived into a tackle to try and win the ball, and a bit of Nelthorpe at the same time.

Ryan Donaldson had a handful of chances. He found himself inside the penalty area after a good bit of build up only to shoot wide of the post from 10 yards out. He had another shot at goal, this time from 20 yards out after a good knock down from Dan Taylor who had come on for Nile Ranger, that stung the hands of the keeper. Donaldson was again involved in some build up play that saw him play a good first time flick from just outside the area into the path of Dan Taylor. Taylor's shot was saved and hurriedly cleared, which saw the ball quickly looped back into the box by Newcastle. Greg McDermott was first to it and lifted it over the keeper, however the goal was ruled out as the ref had already blown his whistle for offside.

Dan Taylor and Ryan Donaldson linked up well though, a classic nod to the 'littlebigman partnership' of old. Taylor impressed me with his work rate and looks to be a good Targetman in development.

Two more changes by Newcastle saw Dennis Knight come on for Edmundsson and Alex Nicolson on for Conor Newton (who was visibly annoyed with the decision). Neither player really got involved in the game, however both looked to have a bit of pace to them. Nicholson looked keen to get forward from the Full Back Position, and Knight didn't seem afraid to try some nice touches (however few paid off).

The 2nd half fizzled out without much incident, and probably wouldn't have been missed if the game had ended at half time. Man of the Match for me was Greg McDermott.
