By Mick Smith, The Evening Chronicle

Spare us this Toon tirade - It seems our sportswriters are just like Newcastle United at the moment; they can't win.

With the Magpies struggling for Premier League form everyone from Freddy Shepherd to the cat has had it in the neck from disgruntled fans.

And caught up in the latest frenzy is the Chronicle.

In the past few days we have been criticised in letters, e-mails and on messageboards for not being critical enough of the club. And then we are attacked by others for being too critical.

The Daily Mail had the temerity to call us Freddy Shepherd's mouthpiece - the same newspaper who said David Beckham was on the verge of signing for United in the summer, incidentally.

Story continues Continue story

It seems we are damned if we do and damned if we don't.

It would look a bit odd if this newspaper didn't carry the chairman's comments, ask him difficult questions and criticise where deemed necessary.

Quite often Mr Shepherd doesn't like what we write and isn't slow in letting us know, so to say we are his mouthpiece is a gross distortion of the truth.

The Chronicle speaks to all those with an interest in the club - chairman, players, fans, manager, shareholders, the lot.

No newspaper contains as much news on Newcastle United, or carries so many views with our own writers, columnists (including ex-players), punters' panel, text messagers and those who contribute to our messageboard on ChronicleLive.

Football is all a game of opinions but it seems fans are scenting blood and, apart from those in charge, the easiest target for some is the local newspaper.

We are here to inform, engage, challenge and entertain as well as tell it as we and you, the reader, see it.

We do not pick the chairman, the team or decide on transfers or tactics.

We also see no merit in jumping on the Shepherd Out bandwagon which appears to be rolling, especially when there is no credible alternative at this time.

We want the same as all those connected with Newcastle United and their fans - success on the pitch.

And we will continue to reflect all opinions - whether the editor, chairman or anyone with an interest in Newcastle United agrees with them or not.

Complete crap. Local journalists are not 'an easy target' in this kind of situation. In fact, this is the first time I've heard of any local paper, anywhere in the country, coming under fire in this kind of way.

Freddie Shepherd's mouthpiece? Freddie Shepherd's ringpiece more like.

fucking arseholes.

and as for the cirtiscism of that shite rag the Mail. I seem to remember a Chronicle headline in the summer that unveiled Fat Eddie Murphy as our new signing.

the Chronicle will never be anything but a shite local rag who do whatever the fat prick tells them to.

SHEPHERD OUT.

Who the frig is "Mick Smith" anyways ?

And by the whining of the piece he and Freddie FatBoy ARE both mutual tossers.

The Chronicle seem content, reading that crap, to wallow in the same pigsty.

Let 'em.

I say boycott both.

Childish reportsers to be honest, to use temrs like "the Shepherd otu bandwagon"

so thousands of fans who have had enough of Freds shocking dedisions costing the club and want him out is a bandwagon.

God for once I wish they would grow some bollocks, shit scared of the club is what it is terrified Fred bans them from speaking to nayone involved witht he club.

But doesnt their fear just show what a twat Fred is and can be?

They report how we feel but do their best to belittle it, Fred out as Chairman is what we want, a person in there that we can trust to do the right thing

but we cannot even cunt on the backing of the local press, who know we are right but are to soft to stand up and be counted.

They need to be the voice of the fans and the club, rite what is being said from both sides and just stand in the middle, is that really to hard to do ?

I made a post on tht blog on the tyne blog thing of the Chronicle's, it was basically a Freddy is to blame and so is Roeder rant in response to their "its all down to Souness" comments. Where it asks for your URL I put Nufc Mismanagement link in. Guess what? My entire post which contained no swear words or anything naughty, didn't get published.

The Chronicle are puppets to the club and it doesn't matter what they say, the newspaper is shit, they've been worked out by fans and don't like it, they're probably not selling as many papers so are defending the position they've taken.

“Quite often Mr Shepherd doesn't like what we write and isn't slow in letting us know”

Another clear indication that FFS is operating the f***ing strings on this journalistic (but not necessarily literate) marionette.

Next issue "We would like to apologise for saying last week that Shepherd immediately tells us when he doesn't like what we've written.  He phoned last night to demand that we retract this statement, which we do unconditionally and with our sincere apologies."

Just confirming their toe the line stance by reacting like that.

If you were reporting accurately you would not have anything to defend.
