Well, some day we had to lose.

Also, I worship the land that Guardiola steps on, but putting Jeffren at rigthback was a big big mistake. Guy's a winger, and the only time he's played there he was *woeful* against very poor opposition. Reyes ran circles around him tonight, and he was lucky not to be sent off since he made a lot of mistimed tackles. Rather he put an specialist there, even if he hasn't played games at the top level.

Who would you have played?

Muniesa at CB and Puyol RB, or maybe Bartra at RB. I guess Guardiola preferred two senior CBs to deal with Agüero and Forlán, but Reyes really ran us ragged tonight. Muniesa's highly rated and has played in a CL final already, so I think he would have copped better than poor Jeffren (guy's confidence is probably shot after tonight).

Excuse my ignornace if this is wrong, but is Muniesa the one who was sent off on his debut? Blonde haired lad.

Villa's cup.

Today just had that feel of a winning team looking back and saying "... and remember how close we were to going out to Palace"

I have to say, and this is said against the background of one final appearance in 53 years, that I really, really feel this is our year.

So many conspiring factors - three of the big four out, Man United style easy (well, ish) draws every round so far, and we're a decent cup team.

I thought exactly the same thing as you today. As soon as Petrov scored, I started exploring prices for us to win it.

I'm aware the above is largely irrational, but hey ho, that's football innit

martin o'neill has spent 200M quid at aston villa  :frantic:

Except he hasn't.

How much better should we be doing? A top four ever-present in three years? It doesn't happen that way, sadly.

This was a cup tie, anything can happen. Ask Man United. Or Arsenal. Or Liverpool.

well what is the exact figure, cos from football podcast's i've been reading it's pretty close

villa we're a mid-table team before o'neill came, fine they've improved but that's a lot of money in anyone's view

80m or so - ie 20m a season over four seasons. It' s a lot of money, but it isn't 200m.

And we were not a mid table team when he arrived - if you look at the state of the squad he inherited from DOL, it was bound for relegation the next season - no questions, To go from there to where we are now in four years, and how strong the squad looks now, it is about as much progress as you could expect him to make.

Your "one final in 53 years" made me just check your honors list Brummie, for some reason I thought Aston Villa had won more stuff! (and I don't mean that disparagingly, always considered AV a classic English side).

Still, you won an EC before us did!

I think you have a shot at the cup, if Chelsea drops a bollock. But yeah, that Petrov goal smells of champions' luck.

It is the FA Cup which has a hoodoo over us.

Won it seven times, but not since 1957. Since then we've won five league cups, a championship and a European Cup, but just the one FA Cup final (which I eradicated from my mind before I'd even left the stadium).

On the law of averages, surely it can't evade us for much longer? Surely eventually we must win it? Even when there were four balls left in the draw today, and we had a one in three chance of getting Birmingham - which would be perfectly poised for us to bollocks it up - things went for us.

We've even beaten Chelsea once this season. In fact, of the PL sides left in it, we haven't lost to any of them this season.

I'm trying my best to convince myself.

Neil Warnock, the prize tosser, complaining about a linesman:

"Does he realise how hard it is at a club who can't even afford this, that and the other? We came up against a top side and we're giving absolutely everything for the cause and we are not let down by a football matter. We are let down by incompetence."

That's ok Neil, Crystal Palace will be let down by yours eventually

The abysmal marking from the corner was equally to blame, but he never mentioned that....

He also never mentioned some of the ridiculous offside decisions given against us by the same linesman, and the failure to spot Alan Lee elbowing Stephen Warnock in the face.

He's funny, Neil Warnock, but he really is a daft twat at times.

We're out of it imo. I think we'll do enough to beat Bolton but can't see us beating Fulham at the Cottage.

Why so defeatist? Spurs probaly have the second best team left in the tournament.

Spurs = defeated. It's who they are.

Also forgot to mention the goal from a corner that shouldn't have been given they got against Wolves.

I like him.

It's like interviewing some fella in the pub post-match.

Could easily get a replay, and then would be expected to beat them at home.
