David28
Not really sure about the continued references to his first couple of years here. Yes they were s***, but that's way in the past. Last season he was one of our best players, and was actually voted the best in the Chronicle's unofficial player of the year award. He made a decent start to this season too. That's what we're losing, not the Barton from two/three years ago. But using your same line of thought, couldn't one argue that that was last season, i.e. in a virtually different team with different players, and hence there are no guarantees that Barton would be as good this season and beyond? Is there a guarantee about any player in this world?

Aye, he'd done nowt for 3 years, there's no guarantee whatsoever that he could keep up last season's form, and in particular on the sort of contract he seemingly wanted. black_n_white
The crux of it for me is quite simply this: Over the last season or two, for me our top performers have been Coloccini, Carroll, Nolan, Barton, Enrique and Tiote. And now two of the six remain This
Guest sicko2ndbest
The BBC interview is a great candid interview Love the last question BBC 'A Football club needs a director' JB 'Without the artists on the pitch the director is nothing' or similar words to that effect

I'm happy with Cabaye for Nolan, Marveaux for Barton, Enrique's replacement seems like it's going to be better than the likes of Bridge & Shorey which a lot of people were fearing, leaving the centre-forward position to be sorted. JH
Cabaye for Nolan in terms of quality is good, in terms of goals the jury is still out. We haven't replaced Carroll, Barton or Enrique yet. Pieters there is still question over until he actually signs and plays for us, Marveaux isn't a right winger (neither is Obertan) so isn't really Barton's replacement and we are still short of a striker. Big big five days to come.
Guest
Marveaux's no less a right midfielder than Barton was this time last year.

What's the sort of "contract he seemingly wanted" got to do with whether or not he would achieve last season's form this season? He started off fairly well, and I would say that more often than not players in the final year of their contract step it up a notch to secure their future rather than lowering their level. tmonkey
Marveaux's no less a right midfielder than Barton was this time last year. Isn't Marveaux all left footed? Does it really matter? Messi, Zog, Robben, etc etc. As long as Marveaux can play there, he'd surely count as Barton's replacement? If not, given that we're playing this game of "one must replace another", who has Marveaux replaced? (And same for Obertan).
black_n_white
Marveaux hasn't replaced anyone, we just got a good deal due to his contract being up
Ketsbaia
I've never seen a new signing look so gutted to be there. It feels strange to see him somewhere else. Although he was good last season, I don't think we'd need him as much this time. Once a target for his crosses left and we found a better set piece taker, whats left? We'll definitely cope, although I love the guy. He does some really stupid things that we can now admire from afar. His plan to tempt a contract from us backfired. Onwards and upwards! tmonkey
Marveaux hasn't replaced anyone, we just got a good deal due to his contract being up But as stated we're playing this game of "one must replace another". Marveaux must be Jonas' replacement, and Jonas is Barton's replacement. Sorted.
Frazzle
We've lost Nolan, Barton, Carroll, Routledge and Jose. Brought in Cabaye, Marveaux, Ba, Obertan, Pieters(?) If we bring in a striker and if Ben Arfa plays 20+ games then I can't help but think we're stronger this year. Lots of ifs, granted, but there's no guarantee Carroll will score loads this season, no guarantee Nolan would've or that Barton would've kept up his form. Definitely a good point this one. I think Carroll would have maintained and he's only going to get better, but I don't think Nolan would have and there's no guarentee Barton would have. The latter two relied a lot on the former in terms of their statistics last season. Anyway it's a moot point unless they're replaced directly, which doesn't look likely with 5 days left. Having said that, if we do bring in another striker and IF he is quality, then hopefully the attack might even by stronger. Again, more ifs still I guess. Just have to wait and see.
