"Newcastle in for Tommy Smith" Talk Spurt - What ?

People should even be comparing 1993 and now. Back then the gap between the leagues was tiny compared to now. We were loaning players to Premier League teams back then because they couldn't get a game for us in Division 1. Footballs changed. Go for what works now.

What the hell is a quality championship player?

David Kelly, Gavin Peacock, Kevin Scott...

Would be a good signing (As if we're going to get any)

He is a quality Championship player.

If we are to buy someone though, which I doubt we will, shouldn't we buy players that may be able to step up to the PRem at some point instead of a 29 year old average Championshit Striker.

Not when we need to get the wage bill down.

Premiership quality equals at least 50k a week

The only thing that stopped Tommy Smith becoming a great player rather than a good one is a lack of pace. He is a really good footballer but lacks pace.

Should fit right in here then.

You don't need pace and technique in this league to do well. You just need one of the two and a load of blood and guts.

Individually you may not need pace but as a team we are crying out for it

The far superior premier league technique makes up for it in my opinion. Plus slower players like Alan Smith actually look quick in this league.

Smith plays right wing and can score and create in this league. Exactly what we need right now.

"One of his best seasons by far was the 2008/09 season, where he scored 17 league goals and made 9 assists. In doing so he was statistically named the Championship's top midfielder and was overall ranked second in the list of top 100 footballers in the football League. In addition, as well as finishing as the clubs top scorer, he was named player of the season for the second year running"

If he was quicker, he would be able to play for Bolton/Wigan and the like. If you were to combine work-rate and technique then compare players on this basis, you wouldn't find a better player in this league. He's the only player in our team with any sort of creative spark as well as having been our top scorer last season. He's a right-winger/second striker and has a bloody good return for his position, in terms of goals and assists. The only problem is, he's getting slightly old. Thankfully, he wants to stay down South (hence rejecting a move to Sheff Utd (He'd only displace his family for ~20k p/w)), so I think he's off to Reading anyway.

Also: if you lot think he's 'beneath' you, or not good enough in any way, you're completely and utterly deluded. You're a Championship team and he has been one of the best Championship players consistently over the past two seasons. You're not going to be signing Lionel Messi anytime soon.

You jest surely? How many clear cut chances did we create at WBA? Its in attacking areas where we are woefully short in skill and pace

We lacked because Jonas squandered every good opening we had and because Duff can't cross from the right, but had to be moved there to accomodate him. WBA defended so deep that they'd be punished if we got some good crosses in. Fucking off Jonas and getting Smith is what this team really needs.

We used Jonas left Duff right most of last year though. Based on most of Jonas' career on the left its pretty obvious its his favoured position. For the record both are shite at crossing from any side/position/angle

Championship 08/09:

Top Scorers: Ebanks-Blake (25), McCormack (21), Scotland (21), Doyle (18), Smith (17)

Assists: Kightly (19), Hunt (18), Wallace (14), Blake (12), Kebe (11), Smith (9), Sam (9), Commons (9)

I'd definitely have him if there was truth to this!!
