Villas-Boas, appointed in the summer after a trophy-laden spell at former club Porto, hopes the fixture list will enable Chelsea to gain further ground on the top two.

"It's a good thing for us looking into the future as the other big title chasers play against each other, said the 33-year-old former Porto boss who joined Chelsea in the summer.

"And if we can beat Everton then we can wait for these results and be closer to the top, or move away from those challenging us.

"The Premier League is taking a pattern with other teams like Newcastle and Tottenham challenging us for this position and Liverpool winning the Liverpool derby."

Swindon boss Paolo di Canio encourages players to dive

Swindon Town manager Paolo di Canio has said he will encourage his players to dive in order to win penalties.

He made the remarks after their 2-0 defeat by Macclesfield, in which Matt Ritchie had a penalty appeal dismissed because he stayed on his feet after being clipped by keeper Jose Veiga.

"From now on I will tell my players to dive," Di Canio told BBC Wiltshire.

"From now on I will bring in a different culture because this was a red card and penalty."

He added: "I'd prefer that they risk getting a yellow card for simulation. My team are the only ones who do not dive somewhere around the field.

"It's not fair but it's the only way to receive something.

"He [Ritchie] was too honest but it wasn't malicious - he [Veiga] had no intentions. You can't stay on your feet just because you want to be honest."

Although Swindon have been in impressive form at the County Ground, with four wins from five games, Friday night's defeat at the Moss Rose was their fifth loss of the season away from home.

And Di Canio believes his side need to develop a "nasty" streak if they want to be keep up with the promotion-chasing pack in League Two.

"Ritchie's moment was the picture of the game," he continued. "We are not a nasty team. And this is what makes me not very happy sometimes because we don't have a nasty player.

"I don't know how much I can improve my team in this way.

"With some players, if he has a chihuahua character I can't make a chihuahua into a rottweiler. He could be a proud chihuahua but he remains a chihuahua.

"So many of the players at the moment are chihuahuas away from home - this is the truth."

Think Paolo is losing it.

It has to be in the name:

Newcastle Jets have sensationally sacked coach Branko Culina just four days out from the start of the new A-League season.

The Jets released a statement today saying they had terminated Culina's contract effective immediately and had also applied to Football Federation Australia to have the contract of his son, injured Socceroos midfielder Jason Culina, set aside.

Advertisement: Story continues below Culina’s sacking came only hours after the coach attended the A-League’s official season launch in Sydney today.

The experienced mentor appeared in good spirits there and was upbeat about his side’s chances ahead of their opening match against Melbourne Heart on Saturday.

The club said National Youth League coach Craig Deans would take over the coaching role for Saturday’s match, with an announcement on a ‘‘new coaching structure’’ to be made in the near future.

The decision to try and have Jason Culina’s contract also terminated comes after the star off-season signing was last week ruled out for the entire season due to knee surgery.

Jets’ chief executive officer Robbie Middleby said in a statement: ‘‘The decision to terminate the contracts was made after a long deliberation by the Newcastle Jets’ Advisory Board.

‘‘The club believes that it is highly unlikely that Jason will return to the A-League in the near future, following medical advice.’’

Jets owner Nathan Tinkler, who took over the club last season, acknowledged the timing of the announcement was not ideal but backed the club’s staff and players to get on with the new season.

‘‘Jason’s injury could mean the Jets are without their marquee player for up to three seasons - not a good result for the club, supporters, sponsors and players,’’ Tinkler said.

‘‘While I acknowledge the difficult timing of this announcement, I am confident in the character of the Jets’ players and staff who will quickly put this matter behind them and enjoy a great season.’’

Losing it? The motherfucker never had it. Serves whoever runs Swindon for picking someone purely based on their name as a bit of publicity. This was never going to end well.

Did this happen because he kicked up a fuss about the club wanting to terminate Jasons contract? If so, thats f***ing pitiful.

Bit sketchy on details at the moment but it appears that Branko pushed through the signing of Jason even though Jason was injured and now it turn out JC will probably never play competitive football again and he has a VERY lucrative contract signed for 3 years.

I should def start an A-League thread on here  :shifty:

I read somewhere that they couldn't get any insurance for him because they signed him while he was injured? If thats the case i can't exactly blame them for wanting to get rid of him seeing he may not play for potentially 3 years. Pretty stupid to sign an injured marquee player though. Though sacking Branko because he pushed through the deal/doesn't want Jasons contract terminated is way OTT. It is the owners who have the final say on signings anyway.

From what I understand Tinkler asked Branko who he wanted to sign. Branko said Jason who was finishing up with Gold Coast United. Tinkler organised for Jason to come down and asked for Branko to put him through a medical before signing. Now this is where it gets murky:

At the time Tinkler was hiring a whole new medical team for the Jets and the Knights and as such they had no doctor employed by the club. Apparently Branko had an old mate do the medical and reported back that Jason would miss the pre season but be good by the 5th round. Once Tinkler had the new medical team in place the head doctor came back to him and said basically Jason's knee is completely fucked he will probably never play again. Tinkler lost his shit because obviously being a very succesful business man he doesn't like being ripped off. He ordered a full investigation into the first medical and the facts he was presented and whether or not the injury could have come up since the first medical and as a result he decided o sack Fiddy buck Bwanko and is trying to get Culina's contract terminated.
