Dokko Posted June 28, 2011 Share Posted June 28, 2011 ALBION’s will find out during the coming weeks whether they stand any chance of bringing Steve Harper to the club – as Lazio prepare for talks over Gabriel Tamas. Newcastle goalkeeper Harper is keen to stay at St James’ Park but is fully aware that he might struggle for a first-team spot next season. Alan Pardew has effectively challenged his three stoppers – Tim Krul and Fraser Forster being the other two – to earn their stripes during Newcastle’s pre-season campaign. The 36-year-old is settled in the area – having been with the Geordies for 18 years – but his future now seems to depend upon whether he can force his way to the front of the queue. He certainly seems keen to give it a shot at this stage, though. “Every season the managers here have always said nobody is No.1 – it’s up to you to convince them in pre-season who deserves the shirt,” he said. “And I’m sure it’ll be no different this time. Every season it gets harder.” Harper has just one year left on his current deal and it won’t take a huge transfer fee to turn Newcastle’s head.
