Segun Oluwaniyi
I hate him for OM because he's frustrating. He has a massive amount of talent, and there were stretches last year where he was one of the better players at the club and scored some massive goals. At the same time, he can very selfish on the pitch and is noted as being a petulant bastard off of it. He's worn out his welcome at OL and OM now. Still, I feel like he can be a star. I feel like he's worth the risk for this club. You cannot deny that he is a fantasticly gifted footballer. Marseille are trying to push on for titles and European success, NUFC are just trying to stay up. We can deal with his issues.

Marseille are trying to push on for titles and European success, NUFC are just trying to stay up. We can deal with his issues. Pretty much exactly what I guessed. The fact that that if we got him and some how managed to utilise his talent, we'd have a very good player on our hands. It's the kind of transfer that like you say is worth the risk, we don't have the cash to get a ready made star - so why not take a punt on resurrecting a players' career? If worst comes to worst he's young enough to be moved on with little loss. Loan with future fee agreed, would be the perfect scenario really.
macca888
As good as he is, I would think Hughton has more positions in the team to fill as priority over another midfielder. I cannot see him coming to SJP especially as Hughton has signed Gosling, probably will sign Cleverely on loan and with the prospect of Taylor being out for a considerable time, another centre half is now more important. Furthermore, cover at left back is also a priority as well as a nippy striker. I would rather see us sign the turkish lad from PSG than this guy. Guest geordienorway
Wow. L'Equipe is now saying representatives from Newcastle will arrive in France on Monday to broker a deal for Ben Arfa. http://www.lequipe.fr/Football/breves2010/20100725_085345_newcastle-accelere-pour-ben-arfa.html
Guest
Would be great if this was Hughton being Hughton, playing everything down, and then bang, we've got him. Here's hoping anyway.

Guest
I just hope it's not the club making the same mistakes as two years ago, and going over Hughton's head to sign him...although would anyone be that bothered for a player like Ben Arfa?
Cajun
So Benjamin Arfa? Winger? Central AM, playing off Carroll? Where would he work best for us?

Cajun
It's a dangerous game. Not sure how I would feel, it depends on Hughton really and how the signing would fit into his plans.
Ikon
I reeeeaaally want him here, trying to convince myself that he's not coming here because i know i will end up disappointed anyway, easier said than done though! Fingers crossed though

Guest prestonj1989
His name is Hatem Ben Arfa not Benjamin Arfa. Hughton and Calderwood did not travel back with the squad yesterday so might have gone to look at some players.

Mr Logic
He cost 11m euro in 2008, what price now? Can anyone see Ashley spending half that? He fits the profile of others we've signed recently, young etc. but the difference is this guy can actually play football and would cost a lot. But it also mentions a "stability-clause" in his contract which could see him leave for 3 million euros in 2011. As a result, OM could be forced to accept a cut-price offer. Guest
Buy him for £6m, then after a good season sell him to Arsenal or City for £12-15m is no doubt Ashley's thinking.
Mr Logic
Also can't help but feel if this guy is available there'd be a lot of interest, which would probably leave us near the starting post in terms of an attractive option.
junkhead
He's among my favourite players despite so far failing to live to the expectations.. We need at least another flair player upfront and Ben Arfa is as good as we can get.. A massive gamble still.. He has fallen out with pretty much everybody he's worked with and we all remember our previous experiences with French players.

Cronky
Dont see how Gosling will affect Cleverley given that he is out for the first 20 games or so at least. Plus Cleverley will be a bit further up the field(or on the wing) than Gosling would normally play wouldnt he? It's certainly in our interests to sign Cleverley, for those kinds of reasons. But Gosling isn't out for the season, and so I wonder whether Cleverley and Man U may now have better options ie somewhere he's needed more. Natural pessimist me, though. Know what you are saying but with injuries like Goslings there will be a easing in period too so Cleverley should get nigh on 3/4 of the season ahead of him. Plus they are different players and Cleverley will offer a lot more in attacking situations from what i have seen which is what we need more. I can see Cleverley getting well over 30 appearances which is exactly what Fergie will want for him. Dont see any problem with this idea as its win-win for everyone. http://www.sundaysun.co.uk/sport/newcastle-utd/2010/07/25/nufc-in-four-way-fight-for-young-tom-cleverley-79310-26924469/ Might be speculation on the Sun's part, but they're saying that Ferguson is asking for assurances that Cleverley will feature regularly in the first team, which is fair enough, and that may cause us to lose out. Which would be a shame. Tbh I've got my doubts about Routledge having an impact in the Premiership, despite his playing a big part in the final promotion push. Playing with two out and out wingers is also a bit risky at this level, for us. I know we're probably only talking about a one season loan, but I'd really try and find room for Cleverley.
