NUFC transfer rumours in the press

Carroll would actually be a useful addition to the squad of one of the bigger clubs like Chelsea. He wouldn't be a starter, but his power in the air would be a useful option if they were chasing a game and the usual strategy was failing.

Plus he's English which will be important for their CL squad.  Surprised Chelsea haven't made more of an effort to keep Joe Cole tbh.

Asking for £110,000 a week apparently.

And the alternative is to let a £15m+ player walk out the door and spend a similar amount to replace him.  £110,000 pw is a ridiculous amount of money but still a cheaper alternative to Cole going on a Bosman.

The problem Chelsea have is a spiralling wage bill. It's all very well paying John Terry 150K a week as an exceptional player, but then other players like Cole on half that money are going to look at that and demand more in their turn. Unless you really are a bottomless pit of money and you're prepared to let that cycle continue, you end up in trouble.

Well, contemplating about it it's more sad than funny. As the original reason I found it funny was "Yeah, like we'll ever get players like that!"

And now it's all. "We'll never get players like that. :undecided:"

Rule number 1. Never trust a poster with a number in their name if they're claiming to be ITK.

Chris Hughton makes vow on NUFC signings

CHRIS HUGHTON today urged Newcastle United fans to stay cool when it comes to incoming transfers at St James' Park this summer. But he did assure the Toon Army that United are working round the clock to make sure they can compete in the top flight next term. The Chronicle understands that a new centre-forward is high on Hughton’s wishlist ahead of the Premier League’s big kick-off. But with the real business in the transfer market unlikely to gather pace until the beginning of July, the Newcastle boss isn’t concerned by the panic merchants that have already written United off in this summer’s chase for new faces. However, Hughton re-iterated his view that the days of fantasy football signings in the Premier League are scarce – not only for the Magpies.

Hughton is not alone when it comes to cutting his cloth accordingly as British football takes a reality check after over a decade of big money buys and wages that has left sides like Portsmouth and Rangers on their knees financially, and even Liverpool and Manchester United currently wading through millions of pounds of debt. Hughton told the Chronicle today: “One thing I’m positive about is come the start of the season, is that we’ll have the amount of players we need to be able to compete. What I have said is that we have a competitive squad, and I’m not keen to disrupt too much of what we had last season.”

But Hughton did convey the message to Toon fans that new arrivals are imminent in the next six weeks. He went on: “What I’m very conscious of is that we need to add to the squad. It’s something we’ll definitely do. What’s more important than doing it right at this moment, is to make sure we bring the right players in.”

Hughton expects only an elite group of Premier League sides throwing around any financial weight, and said: “The bigger signings will be from your Man Citys and Chelseas, and maybe Spurs. That level of club will be bringing in the bigger signings, but there will be movement amongst all of that, and there will be movement at Newcastle. What happens at this stage of the season is you’re starting to see a slow drip of transfers, and that will escalate. What’s more important than bringing in players early, is bringing in players.”

Hughton has also been linked with loan moves such as Manchester United duo Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck and Arsenal youngster Jack Wilshere. And when asked if the players he has in mind will excite Newcastle fans, he said: “I hope so. Among all that we want to do pre-season, there’s also, of course, a realisation that there aren’t the finances that there were before. If I look at some of the big-name signings this club has made in the past for big money, there’s a realisation we’re not in those times now. What we have to make sure we do is bring in the right players, rather than names that are just going to excite. We have to add to what we’ve already got, improve what we’ve got, and are going to be fixtures in the team that we have. Among all of that, there will be transfers this summer, and we will be involved in some transfer dealings this summer.”

Meanwhile, Stoke City are reportedly preparing to offer James Beattie plus cash for Andy Carroll – but such a derisory attempt to land a player tipped to star for England in future years is hardly likely to be taken seriously by Hughton.

Text book stuff there. Expect over the next few weeks these sort of utterings morphing into things like " we have a squad of premier league quality players" and "if we don't add to the squad I'll still be very satisfied with this group of lads."
