but he plays in a high profile area of the pitch and never, repeat never, hides, even when he is having a stinker!

I'm sorry but that's just not true. He's always quick to get rid of the ball (usually with a hopeless long pass) and even when there's nobody around him, he either clears it or passes to a team mate under pressure. His job on the field is to win the ball, retain possession and calm things down. He does neither.

Kevin Nolan's attitude has been a "disgrace" this season too, apparently.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't just his attitude but just in general that he'd been a disgrace for nigh on the whole season. FFS.

disgraceful.

should be enrique if we are going to just give it to somebody for emotional reasons, been head and shoulders above everybody

You don't give that to "somebody for emotional reasons" I think.

You give it to the captain - and Butt is the captain so he should rightly lift that trophy.

and Butt was appointed club captain at the start of the season.  He's going to lift the trophy.

Am with Otter on this, to call Butt lifting the trophy 'disgraceful' is way over the top.

yes but it doesn't change the fact that he shouldn't have been captain in the first place.

I don't think he should have been captain either, but it can't be that bad a decision considering we were still promoted and champions with games to spare.

thats a totally different argument.  Half the time he hasn't been on the pitch so wasn't the captain ffs.

there we go.  Am not the one venting anger that Butt will lift it.  Maybe he and Smith will take a handle each like some other clubs have done when their captain has been suspended/injured.

Officially his last match at SJP on Saturday.  :morph:

Club Captain Butt Set For St.James' Farewell

By Craig Hope

NEWCASTLE United skipper Nicky Butt will appear at St.James' Park for the final time in black-and-white colours when he lifts the Championship trophy following Saturday's home game with Ipswich Town.

The former England international was handed the club captaincy at the start of the season by manager Chris Hughton and has been an influential figure both on and off the field during the promotion campaign.

And, speaking to nufc.co.uk, boss Hughton paid tribute to "model professional" Butt.

"Nicky has been a wonderful footballer, a tremendous servant to this football club and a model professional throughout his career,"

"I would like to thank him for all that he has done for both myself and for Newcastle United.

"Any young player trying to make their way in the game should look to players such as Nicky Butt as an example of how to be a professional footballer.

"It is fitting that his final season with the club should be one in which he captains us to promotion, and I would like to wish him all the very best for the future."

Nicky will lift the Championship trophy along with Alan Smith following Saturday's game against The Tractor Boys.

Still dislike him a little bit as a professional, even if it's somewhat unjustified.

Butt had what is most likely the worst season the Premiership has ever seen from a regular player in our relegation year. Absolute dogshit doesn't begin to describe the majority of his performances, and he had a bigger hand than any other player in us going down, mainly because he was consistently the opposition team's best friend.

My point here is that with his standards (both ability and fitness) slipping to such shocking lows, why not just call time and retire? A good player with real integrity would have retired last summer. Cantona did so at 31 after his standards had slipped, but then he was genuine class and had pride in his ability/reputation. Butt on the other hand seems to be from the Souness school of 'hanging-on-for-every-penny-you-can-get'. He was happy to sit on the bench nearly every week in the Championship on mammoth wages after extending a contract option put in by a previous manager, despite knowing that his time was up and his standard had gone to pot, with the icing on the cake being that he did so at a club that had to sell anyone and everyone it could to reduce the wage bill, a club that even had to axe a large number of normal non-playing employees. It's not as though he wasn't already a very wealthy man having had a long career at ManU, playing for England, picking up a hefty wage from us, etc.

Maybe the expectation is a bit unfair given that other players were on large contracts (though all useful ones not on the verge of retirement), or that he has every right to look after himself and be paid whatever salary was offered to him by the club. But then thinking about Butt's awful standard of play and fitness + his hand in our relegation + his wages + the players/staff we had to let go in the summer (even if Butt leaving might not have changed any exits), forgive me for holding a slight grudge against him.
