Parky
Find it strange Heskey is getting so much blame, he's put in two typical Heskey performances. It's the under performing players like Lampard and Rooney who should be taking the flack. Has an assist for our only goal so far.
Geordie Boot Boy
This thread's uncalled for IMO. Things go wrong, so the scapegoat comes out, even though this scapegoat's arguably been the only player doing his job to the level he's expected. Jayson
Think Lampard was as much an issue as heskey really. Rooney is getting blame for something which isnt much his fault imo. Hes being massively marked out of games due to those around him.

Hes being massively marked out of games due to those around him. One of those being Heskey who just doesn't need marking, at all. If anything it would be better to let him have a run because it will be easier to get the ball back from the inevitable goal kick than it would be making an effort to tackle him. Much better than putting on someone who can, you know, score goals...

Things go wrong, so the scapegoat comes out, even though this scapegoat's arguably been the only player doing his job to the level he's expected. If a striker has scored 7 goals in 60 matches he's clearly not doing his job. Crouch has 3 times as many goals in near half the amount of games. Criticising a player doesn't equal him being a scapegoat. It's a thread that, on the whole, is discussing how on earth this clown is in our starting line-up. Cajun
I don't buy into the "a striker must score goals" thing entirely but if they don't score they need to do more than occasionally hold the ball up. Bergkamp wasn't massively prolific* but he was massively creative. *Compared to Heskey he was practically Romario mind.
Wullie
Sorry like but there's no way he's been "England's best player" in the first two games, if he has it's because we have such low expectations of him. Rooney, Gerrard, Lampard are all expected to produce something beyond the capabilities of a Championship player but with Heskey, some people genuinely think that bringing the ball down 40 yards from goal and laying it off to someone else is enough to keep a player in a World Cup side. Andy Carroll can do that ffs and occasionally sticks the ball in the net to boot. If Wayne Rooney receives the ball and immediately gives the ball to someone else and that's the only thing he does in the match, has he been England's best player? It's enough for Emile. Heskey's not there to score lots of goals, he's there to improve the team. How has the team done in those 60 matches? It's all that actually matters in the end. I like Crouch and I wouldn't object to seeing him start but I don't think he's automatically a better choice than Heskey because he's scored more goals than Heskey. Having watched the first two games, he HAS been the best player. Poor supply or not, he owes the FANS not vice versa.
Neil
Rooney has been no worse than Heskey. It's the fact so much more is expected from Rooney, and his performances have been disappointing relatively.

Was thinking more at Arsenal but it's a silly comparison to make anyway really, just a poor way of saying there is more to playing up front than scoring but as Wullie says, Heskey receives the ball, passes it to the nearest man and this is somehow seen as good play. He is basically a holding midfielder that got lost (and falls over a lot). This David Batty if you stuck him up front and relied on him to create for his partner
Neil
I shouldn't really be laughing but when he did those stepovers, fucked it up and floated the ball out for a goal kick, fucking hell man.

I knew he would fuck it up but to be fair he far exceeded my expecations so fair play on that one Emile. The "stepover" was something special. Poor supply or not, he owes the FANS not vice versa. Barry was more useful than Heskey yesterday with his clearances. He gave away the ball due to lack of options but he was definately involved. Gerrard tried to get all over the place, obviously he doesnt suit being on the left atall and kept dropping inside. Nearly all our chances involved him though. Heskey just takes down long balls to provide to the others and had very little options. Still when Defoe came on, he was nearly put through twice within 5 minutes. We got more corners in those first minutes of him being on that at any other point in the game. That surely proves that changing the way we attack is influenced by the strikers we use & is something we should look to change if we want to be more dangerous going fowards. Dr Venkman
the thing that annoys me about heskey being in the team is the the ONLY sane explanation for him being in the team is the 'system', and the system is an absolute pile of shite. how many times last night was heskey out wide with the ball? why the fuck would you EVER want him out there? Heron
Isn't it strange how no-one criticises Heskey when we are beating Germany 5-1, and no-one would be criticising him if England won their two first games - regardless of perfomances?

Fans moan about things when things aren't going right shocker! When does anyone ever moan about players when we play really well? Does it mean players aren't playing badly or just the fact that we have won so we don't really care?
