What's the problem with seeding?

Seeding is good. Otherwise it'll be like the FA cup and teams equivalent to Cardiff will get to the final.

Then so be it.  Again it gives an unfair advantage towards the clubs in the richest/successful leagues.

How come that doesn't happen every year in the FA Cup and didn't happen in the old European Cup?

It's hugely favoured in terms of draws and finances towards the bigger team due to the coefficients etc. I don't see why a team should be "hamstrug" by what nation they come from, a league win is a league win IMO

Despite APOEL reaching the QFs they'll have earnt way less than any of the other QFs this season because they're not an attractive watch.

Different argument but the "prize money" in the CL is the main reason the FA/Waffa has turned too. So ridiculously overweighted it's untrue.

It's seeding that makes it easy for the top clubs and harder for the smaller clubs.

Would imagine there would have been a lot more random teams making it to the QFs/SFs, but eventually top teams will always make it to the final.

Surely seeding is more of an issue with regards to favouring "elite" clubs than the current qualification system? Not that I want seeding abolished.

Of course it is, yeah, and it should be abolished.

At the very least it should be gotten rid of once in the tournament proper.

The drop out from the group stage of the CL to the Waffa cup is a fucking disgrace as well.

How many times have drop outs won it?

Personally I think it adds to it because UEFA have devalued it so fucking much. Don't agree with it though.

Yeah that certainly needs to be scrapped, yet another thing that values the competitiveness of the CL over the EL.

i can't think of one positive aspect of seeding, unless you view the better teams getting a hand to stay as the better teams a positive.

Aletico did in 2009/10.  Shaktar 2008/09.

The FA Cup and old European Cup proves that the point about crap teams getting to the final is a completely moot one. And even so who cares if they do, that's the point of knock-out football.

Very, very little benefit to seeding. If any.

Well say if Man Utd and Barcelona are clearly the standout best teams on the continent one year - and particularly if it's entirely a knockout competition like people are saying - then it's a bit of a gutter for the neutral if one of those sides goes out first round by virtue of drawing each other.

The CL drop-outs coming in helps to compensate for the fact that there's more places in the CL than there used to be so the quality of the second tier competition is watered down, but it's a completely backward way of going about it really.

Should be top 3 maximum from a singular league IMO in the CL and then expand the Waffa, binning the league stage en route.

Got nee beef with the CL group phases tbh.

Aye, they've got a difficult balancing act between entertainment and equality. Whatever way they go about it, there'll be complaints.

Think the main reason for the CL drop-outs is to keep the CL groups competitive.

and to keep the coffers ticking over for those knocked out.

pretty sure my reason is the main reason.

Just about it, it's to keep if anyone big goes out within Europe for TV reasons.

I really don't think it is, they brought it in when there were situations of teams with no chance of qualifying from the groups essentially throwing games because they couldn't be arsed, leading to a few teams getting fucked over in the process.

It would be class if they got rid of seeding like. In 1978 the winners of the football league, Nottingham Forest played the champions of europe, Liverpool. What a tie to have. Instead of all the tedious knock out games that all the best teams will get out of anyway to get to the last 8. Get fucking rid of it.

whats the point in having a draw then ?

has the seeding in the past, giving these teams an easier run aided their rise to this position ? ie if man utd were drawn against barce in the first round and got knocked that would be a bit of a dent to their finances, meaning they may not be able to go out and buy the best like they have done in the past.

Man U could play Barca in the last 16 anyway.

Last 32 straight knock-out with no seeding. Last 64 with the Europa League.

Group stages means more games which is cool but they're generally wank anyway. Knock-out is always where it gets entertaining.
