JH
We have enough s*** squad players. Some of them are currently starting. Aye, let's just get rid of the lot and just have an 11 player squad.

Aye, let's just get rid of the lot and just have an 11 player squad. Missing the point to a staggering level. We need to bolster the first team. Just like we needed to this time 12 months ago. JH
What? "May aswell sign nobody if we're not going to improve the first XI." Suggests that the first team is all that matters. If our backups are s***, surely we should look to replace them as well?

Yorkie
Backups are nothing if they're not good enough to win games. Pointless us improving the backup if the first choice isn't good enough.

If our backups are s***, surely we should look to replace them as well? Pardew's comments suggest that we are going to sign backups to the likes of Shola and Gutierrez, rather than actively trying to improve on them. We have a reasonably deep squad, the problem is that this squad depth is mainly comprised of players who are not completely up to it at this level, adding more of these types of players (which is what those quotes appear to suggest) just seems pointless to me. I'd rather we bought one good striker than 3 Championship players to further pad our squad with rubbish. Rather than replacing squad players we should be relegating some of the current starters to backup players. That's how it normally works when teams want to improve. Do you want us to end up like Portsmouth? Eh? I'm just saying if we're gonna bring in new players to 'improve the cover', i really couldn't give a shit. First team is where we actually need upgrades. If they're specifically brought in to improve the first eleven, then great.

An example being having Simpson, R.Taylor and Perch for the right-back position and not one of them being good enough. Fair play to Simpson like, he's really impressed me this season but the point remains. For the combined cost and wages of collecting a number of cheap average players we could have a decent one. Same applies up front where we have Lovenkrands, Xisco, Best and Shola picking up wages and they're all pants.
ponsaelius
You've always had a secret love-in for Simpson tbh Dave. Even when he was slated you were proclaiming little Danny had become 'underrated' I agree, though.
Dave
FWIW given Pardew's comments I'd imagine we would be looking for cheap backups to Jose and Jonas. If we're not going to be flogging players I can't see which other areas we're particularly light in.

Dave
Is it not a bit small-time btw that Pardew feels he has to come out and say his main focus in this transfer window is keeping our good players, as though that's something to be particularly proud of in itself? We're probably not going to sell our best players who are doing the business right now. Fucking great that like, amazing stuff. Thanks. Shouldn't even be in question. Yorkie
Precisely. Such a sinking feeling. Not to be all mopey and such, but if Hughton were still here we'd be laughing at the very mention of any doubt surrounding players' futures. Now it's just like . Ketsbaia
To be honest, the last 2 weeks have lowered expectations to the point that a successful window IS to keep our players. A striker would be nice, but I doubt it'd be a decent standard.

Guest Heneage
I think that's very harsh on Simpson. He's not great, but I believe at 23 he has time to develop after all Leighton Baines is really starting to perform and he's 26. I'd also not rule out Xisco quite yet, but I agree the idea of quantity over quality is a little naive. However with signings like Tiote I am buoyed by the potential scouting network we have, the problem is not every player will come as ready to perform like Tiote has, some will take time and development. steve_69
It depends what kind of backup players we go for. There are 3 main types: The first type is players like R Taylor, Alan Smith, Sol Campbell - experienced but sub-standard players who are content warming the bench at a big club - Bad The second type is hungry, unproven youngsters who are happy enough warming the bench for now and getting a little bit of game-time at a big club - Good The third is players from lower leagues who are deemed good enough to make the step up but may need some time to adjust - Hit and miss Pardew has knowledge of the lower league and Ashley loves youngsters and has an eye for a bargain so my guess is that we'll be looking for type 2 and type 3 players, in which case i'd be fairly happy. Ronaldo
Sol Campbell is as sub-standard as Alan Smith now? Pathetic.
steve_69
Sol Campbell is as sub-standard as Alan Smith now? Pathetic. I'm not saying they're on a par but you can hardly claim that Campbell has been decent this season. He also doesn't fall into the category of a lower league player or a hungry youngster does he? It was just an example Ronaldo, don't get your thong in a twist
