And Smith's last 2 starts without Tiote in the team have been Bolton away and Stevenage. Humiliatingly bad.

ALAN SHEARER hopes Newcastle United’s stars will leave the Stadium of Light tomorrow knowing it has been a case of “job done.”

The Geordie legend has fond memories of the Wear-Tyne derby after piling on the agony on Sunderland during a never-to-be-forgotten decade in black and white – and his advice to United stars was simply to stay “cool and calm.”

Indeed, Shearer’s last ever kick in a United shirt was his crucial penalty to fire the Magpies ahead in the 4-1 victory in 2006 as he went out in a blaze of glory in front of the adoring Toon Army on Wearside.

Now Shearer hopes the class of 2011 can experience the same derby joy tomorrow.

He told the Chronicle: “I have some great derby memories.

“The match when we won 4-1 was my last in football – in fact the penalty in that game was my last kick.

“It was a great game to win and a great game on which to go out.

“It was nice to score with my last ever kick and for it to come against Sunderland.

“More importantly, it was great coming out of the stadium knowing it was job done.

“That is the feeling the players will be wanting on Sunday.”

The legendary frontman also feels the absence of his modern counterpart Andy Carroll is the ideal opportunity for somebody else to cover themselves in glory on derby day. Carroll was ruled out by Alan Pardew yesterday with his thigh problem deemed “too risky” in the high- octane environment of a pulsating Wear-Tyne clash.

However, with Shola Ameobi, Peter Lovenkrands, Leon Best and Nile Ranger all vying for a chance, Shearer said: “As far as Andy’s absence is concerned, it is a chance for somebody else.

“Andy’s loss could be somebody else’s gain.

“Leon Best did very well against West Ham, but was then very poor against Stevenage in the FA Cup.

“It is a chance for somebody else.

“It is a great game for somebody to come in and be a hero – the atmosphere will be white-hot. It will not be a dull affair – they never are.” United outshone Sunderland in a 5-1 hammering in October and Shearer has urged the players to enjoy the occasion again on Wearside.

The former England skipper added: “It is a huge game, but a great one for all of the players to be involved in.

“Especially for the Newcastle players, who I think will be up for it despite the result at Stevenage in the FA Cup.

“Sunderland will too, though, after what they endured in the game at St James’ Park when they were on the end of a real drubbing.

“I think Sunderland will go out looking for revenge – and so they should after what happened in October.”

Shearer continued: “I am sure it will still be a great match.

“It would be great to think we will have a similar game to the one in October, but I am not sure we will. I would gladly settle for a 1-0 for Newcastle.

“It is going to be about staying cool and calm and the team which does that will have a great chance of getting a result.”

United boss Alan Pardew is without several of his key first-team personnel at Sunderland and Shearer added: “Newcastle will be missing Cheik Tiote and that is a major blow.

“He has probably been their best player of late.

“Sunderland, though, will be missing Lee Cattermole and he will be a big miss for them.

“Whichever way you look at it, it is going to be tight.

“As I say, it is about whoever keeps cool and calm on the day.”

Newcastle go into the clash in eighth place – and a double over Sunderland would help contribute to what is shaping up to be a respectable campaign for United.

Shearer said: “The Newcastle fans will make plenty of noise.

“They are never outsung by anybody even if they are outnumbered.

“They have always been brilliant.

“If Newcastle win this, then it will make their season.

“It will have been a good season, with some great results and some poor results.

“If they can finish mid-table then it can be classed as a successful season back in the Premier League.”

Alan Smith playing in central midfield can only be a bad thing for us. I rather play him as a forward or on a wing with instructions to be very attacking and put pressure on their defence (if i was told he must play...)

The problem with Smith is he's getting even more anonymous when he gets his first yellow card. Other from that his closing down, positioning and passing is poor.

But I don't think Guthrie is up for it and Gosling isn't match fit...

Nervous as fuck now like.

Really hope Smith doesn't play. Be fucking stupid if he does.

Pardew was talking about how the experienced players are going to be vital tomorrow. If that means Smith playing next to Nolan he might as well raise the white flag now.

Alan Smith is an experienced player. He's probably very vocal in the dressing room and on the pitch. He's played in the Champions League and won the Premier League with Manchester United in 06/07. He's got 19 caps for England and was our captain once.

But he's had his days (despite being only 30 years). He should be no near our starting eleven.

thinking that way would mean campbell aswell. i think (well, hope really) he just means the experienced lads in the team ie barton, nolan, colo, shola.

Hopefully that's what he meant. The fact that we don't really have a defensive midfielder to replace Tiote has me worried though. Pardew might give Smith another shot at it.

ironically when barton has played in the middle he's tried to play that role even when tiotes been in the team.

True, he sits too deep when in the centre. I would rather have Guthrie in the team than Smith though, and considering what I think of him that's saying something.

Barton sitting deep in CM would be a good thing with Tiote out. Sit deep, spray passes about, retain possession. Better option than Smith or Guthrie. Although we'll see

so if the choice is barton wide and smith in the middle or barton in the middle and routledge outside, i can only think of one person who'd even consider it.
