Roeder loved window shopping, like. Easyjetting off to France, Holland etc to watch players we had no hope of signing or paying for.

Dirk Kuyt beinf the perfect example. We seemed to be watching him for ages and ages without actually doing anything. Then Liverpool came in and just took him.

A PSG spokesman said: “The fax machine is on, the door is open, but no-one has made a bid.”

This really does my head in, let's just move on and get someone in

we're making them sweat obviously, them being rolling in money now they'll get desperate near the end of the window right?

right?

They're not conclusive proof of anything, no.

Then again, the fact that we've publicly expressed interest, the fact that multiple media outlets are reporting that he's our main target, the fact that PSG feel the need to come out and deny the rumors leads you to the reasonable conclusion that something is going on.

What out of contract strikers can we turn our attention to when this deal fails on September 1st?

It's embarrassing that we've needed to buy a striker since we got promoted, even before Carroll proved himself, and we still don't have one a year later with pre-season nearly gone and two weeks to kick off.

We need another, but we did buy a striker a month ago. Just saying.

The vague statement that "no official bid has been made" is invoked in every single boring transfer saga every single summer. It means absolutely nothing

This is true. Sure the same line was trotted out by that Dassier bloke during the Ben Arfa saga.

Agent fees :frantic:

Either way, does it matter?

I think it does matter that we seemingly have an adversity to paying flat out transfer fees. Free agents, buy-out clauses... but we don't seem to want to enter negotiation for a player where we will have to pay an actual transfer fee.

i don't think it matters as Ba is obviously a good signing for free/agents fees

we can't build a squad on signings like that though, there just aren't enough knocking about - eventually you'll end up in the realms of accepting poor quality players because they're coming free/cheap

this is my concern, it's similar to when managers like mick mccarthy bring teams of grafters up and they surprise everyone...it works for a while but they always get caught out in the end

that's what i think will happen to us in the long run, if it was as easy as just running about picking up free players why are we the only ones using it as our primary means of acquiring players?

Yes it does matter, it would be nice to bring in a player for money because we think he will improve our side, like our competitors do, rather than bringing in players because they're cheap/free/injured with their quality being rather a distant second priority.

Cabaye, Ba, Gosling, Ben Arfa, Gutierrez, Marveaux, it's all well and good extolling the virtues of these players on the field but we got them because they were all going way below their market value for one reason or another and not because we went out, scouted them and said "he's the one, get him".

Nowt wrong with it individually, but you can't build success like that. We're taking a massive risk injury-wise for a start.

The problem with Gameiro, Gervinho and Erdinc hasn't been the money being available. The players wanted to join or stay with clubs that have better prospects. As we're talking about Arsenal and a cash-rich PSG, that's understandable.

We could start trying to pay way over the odds, or buy players who aren't any better than the ones we've got, of course. Neither seem a good idea to me.
