Davide Santon (now retired)

Recommended Posts

In a 5-3 win over Palermo last season, the defender came on at half-time with his side 4-0 up, only to see the match finish much closer than expected as he was unable to gel with his team-mates at the back. Mourinho spent the match shouting across the pitch at Santon to maintain his position as he got drawn in and exposed far too often.

His last performance against Palermo at San Siro signed his exit papers just before being shipped off to Cesena. The Sicilians once again tormented Santon as his errors were responsible for the visitors' 2-0 lead before he was removed at half-time and the Nerazzurri stormed back to claim a 3-2 win thanks to Giampaolo Pazzini. Error-prone performances have been plaguing Santon season-by-season and he has dwindled from the limelight into mediocrity.

His move to the Stadio Dino Manuzzi offered some stability; he regained his place on the Italian national team under Cesare Prandelli even if his selection owed more to his promise and reputation more than his quality. However, even at Cesena, faults and miscalculations have crept into his game from time to time and in the previous match he was stationed on the bench in favour of Luca Ceccearelli.

The reason for Santon's lack of improvement, other than his troublesome knee injuries, would be a lack of defensive awareness. The full-back definitely has quality, both with the ball at his feet and in his ability to make tackles. However, he is often caught out of position or allows an opposition player in behind too easily.

Seen a few video's of him and he is playing on the left but is all right footed didnt see him use left foot once though he did look very good player

"Davide Santon vs Chievo [27.08.11]"

An assist from a cross with his left there. Looks really attacking.

Happy we've got somebody in and he sounds like a good player. If he's as good a left-back as Enrique was then it's job done. If he isn't, it's a step backwards. Sceptical of whether or not he's actually gonna fit in down the left with ease, cos by all accounts i thought he was a right-back? Concede i've not seen anything of the player but i approach this one with satisfaction and cautiousness. What is pleasing is that we've not had to resort to a shitty loan.

Just confirms what most people have said: there's a lot of work before he's gonna be anyway near the LB we want or need. Potential again.

Not entirely surprising - he's a 20 year old kid.

It took Enrique four years to become the player he is now. We've got this lad in for five years, so when he hits his peak, he'll be able to talk to Liverpool about replacing the ageing Jose.

We sign another kid and the circle of life continues.

Max ivangelista from Italy just talking on  Talk Sport re: Davide Santon suggesting that he was playing very well has great ability but for some reason mentally he was not right and they decided to loan him out.

Inter then took  the decision to sell him. His ability is not in question as he has that, we hope the people in Newcastle can build up his confidence and mental ability.

As he is very young player we think that he can bring back the form that he showed before.
