Yes Wonga may be morally bankrupt, but it has broken no UK law.

Unlike sponsor of other bigger clubs, who have broken major laws. But diddly squat was said.

Go figure

Nuff said to be honest

Might as well get arms dealers on the shirt then. Poor logic.

The logic being where were the people who are now up in arms when Northern Rock was our sponsor, or ntl for that matter?

Taking advantage of people with long-term mortgages that they'll never be able to pay off = acceptable.

Short-term loans that cost a tenner = repulsive. As bad as arms dealers.

needed  that as this thread is boring the shit out of me

I'd love to see some figures of how many lives have been ruined by Wonga.

Since religion's involved in the debate why don't we see some figures on how many lives have been ruined by that?

I wasnt having a go at Wonga by the way, my comment  was aimed at all those who say 'they pray on the poor etc'

Wonga = the arms industry now.

To be honest, while I'm sure you'd swear of football forever if we got Rolls Royce on our shirts. I'd struggle to generate the moral outrage you manage to sustain.

Just a shame a good local company like Armstrong Whitworth aren't still around to sponsor us.

Agreed. I thought Sage would be a good shout...But not sure about their ethical standing. ;)

Bang on, we all know the worlds a bent corrupt place and do nothing about it, but along comes a legal loan shark willing to sponsor us and all of a sudden they find there voices.

Wonga are a morally bankrupt business, but they do not break any british or internationl law.

The above companys have taken a huge part in brining the world just about to it's knees with the s*** storm the caused. Breaking a s*** load of international and national laws. Did the papers print anything neagtive about it ??? did they hell. So why now all of a sudden do these people feel the need to taken the moral highground and denounce this contract as scandal souring the pure and clean game.

Sorry for repeating myself again, just wanted to make the point i was trying to get across a little clearer

Doesn't Wonga let the consumer know what the interest rates are? Or is everything hidden in small print? Genuine question by the way.

I can think of many businesses that do not divulge the full extent of harm their business can and does do, and are still looked upon as professional role models.

I find it hard to believe that the majority of Wonga customers are in unfortunate circumstances. My statistical analysis says that maybe 5% of Wonga customers could be regarded as 'in poverty'. The rest are just daft cunts.

Given that all you've done is assume everyone using Wonga is buying rice for their starving children, I see no reason why I can't assume they're all feckless charvers buying iPads and White Lightning.

I don't know how anyone can claim there hasn't been any negative press about banks, have you all been living on the moon for the past 5 years?  I'm not disagreeing with the sentiment of double standards, exactly, but let's not make out no-one has been bashing Barclays etc.

There has been plenty of bad press about banks, but I've not seen anything at all that claims the premier league is cheapening their brand because of their association with Barclays, and that Muslims will no longer watch the Premier League. Nor have I heard MPs voice their concern with such a sponsorship.

Thats not the point though, they have never been pulled up on who they sponsor and why the actions are bad for the club or league.

Unlike wonga

That's fair enough, but I've read PLENTY of times in this thread now, "there's been nothing said about the banks that fucked everything up", or words to that effect.  The difference is with the banks though, is they're seen as essential to running a country and can't just be done away with.  Wonga aren't exactly an essential part of the economy.

Again, I'm not taking a side here, I don't like Wonga or the banks' collective practices.

It shouldn't be about what's said about other sponsorships, the debate is about Wonga and whether it's seen as a good move.  Pointing out someone else's hypocrisy doesn't make our own any better or worse.

There's been anti-globalisation and anti-bank protests all over the shop the last couple of years. These people must live in a bubble.

And bashing the Premier League for having the temerity to be sponsored by them (with journalists bringing up Sharia law, while the MP's throw their season tickets off their nearest available bridges in mass protest?

Struggling to remember that, though you may be right and I've been living on the moon for the past 5 years.

Barclays were seen as one of the few banks that didn't contribute to the financial meltdown, and they were sponsors of the league before the Libor scandal broke out.  So, no, BB, there weren't any protest or uproar about it because there was nothing there.

Like I say, I don't agree with them being a sponsor either, and I'm sure when the new deal is to be arranged there will be a move to stop them taking it up again, but until then they'll have to wait out this contract.

It's all a bit stupid, everyone knows there's massive hypocrisy in football sponsorships, it's just about the money.  I think people have a right to be peeved at Wonga being our sponsor, pointing out other clubs similar moves should have nothing to do with it.

EDIT:  And the reason Sharia law is brought up because we have muslim players that would have to wear Wonga on the shirt.  We don't wear Barclays, so there's no need for it to be brought up in that context either.

More importantly how has - by any standards a big club that finished 5th, is playing Euro football and has a massive fanbase on its doorstep ended up with such a poor deal with a fifth rate brand (if you can actually call it a brand)?

We have had Virgin Money though and there was no Sharia law based uproar then.
