Crumpy Gunt
http://www.transferleague.co.uk/league-tables/2006-2011.html See's NUFC making a season on season profit over the llast 5 years. Not surprising as it'll include the Carroll wedge. Amazing where we are considering.... Most worrying for our scab ridden neighbours from down the road they sit in 4th place spunking an average of over £13m per season - on well, shit to be honest. Begs the question how much longer will Short prop up this constantly failing Club. Less worrying though is seeing Villa sitting in 5th mainly due to O'Neill spunking tens of millions on utter shite that he upped and fucked off from before the rot set in. It bodes well for the mackems! City spending is amazing. They should have walked away with this league with that spending. NUFC's spending back to 92/93 (although some of the fee's in and out look a bit OTT) http://www.transferleague.co.uk/premiership-transfers/newcastle-united-transfers.html

Guest
Difference is though both of you were already big clubs with excellent squads. City started from nothing in terms of challenging for honours so have naturally had to spend more, pay over the odds, had some poor expensive buys along the Way. Guest
They've also had to evolve the team and turn players over on a regular basis evolving from mid-table, to top 5, to title contenders. Although they got Robinho early on, they couldn't go out and get the likes of Aguero from day one.
Rebellious
Stand out for me there is the fact we paid double for Willi what we did for Simpson and how much we got for Bassong.
Cronky
Interesting. The relationship between spending on transfer fees and achieving success is there, but it's not a particularly strong one, with us, Arsenal and Everton near the bottom, and Stoke, Sunderland and Villa near the top. My hunch is that it shows that blowing a lot of money on one or two players, in the hope that these particular stars will haul you to the next level through individual brilliance, is a flawed strategy. Spending big will only work if you apply it across the entire team. Bit like you're only as good as your weakest links. In terms of a correlation with success, the most signficant statistic is supposed to be the wage bill.
Village Idiot
Pique for £5m? f***ing hell Last year of contract, plus Johnny Evans was better than him dontchaknow I agree that wage bill is probably a better indicator of the relationship between sporting success and financial power. I.E. we didn't pay anything for Messi, Iniesta or Xavi but their wages are pretty high.
Zero
I may be wrong, but i remember Pique left for around 10m? Dos Santos to Tottenham for 8m seems too much as well. 5m per my memory? Real are fucking wasteful though. To be honest, the signings under Perez are ridiculous, but still "worth it" considering their output on the pitch, except Kaka. The likes of Huntelaar, Sneijder, the 2 Diarra and Gago are just pure business fraud. Robben should never cost that much as well.
Village Idiot
Piqué has always been reported as €5m over here. Regarding Dos Santos, it was €6m downpayment with €5m addons. It's been reported over here that €2m of them have been triggered so I used that. Most of the time, however, I just add up addons as if they all triggered, as a rule to cut down guesstimating and being fair. I don't intend my little list to be 100% accurate since you know that reported transfer fees can vary according to source, but it should be a decent ballpark number. Zero
True. The big picture wont be distorted. Just that the thought of Pique costing 5m only is scary Pure robbery, that. Worst sales by Man Utd in history You know, most of the time the dropouts under Alex Ferguson wont play as good as their time in Old Traddford. The best one I can think of is Stam.
