To be perfectly honest, there's a lot that can be done to avoid the big hits. Kick off returns should be scrapped, for one.

You can't change what happens every play on the line of scrimmage. Those are fucking car crashes. The NFL has some serious issues ahead of it.

In the coming years it'll be interesting to see whether the growing brain injury concern about American football results in greater numbers of our top young athletes heading into association football as their main sport. There's still baseball and basketball, which would absorb some of them, but it might result in some uptick for soccer.

Saw what Antwaan Randle El said today?

Yeah. 36 and can't go up stairs right, forgetting stuff. The money's great if you can handle it, which is tough for young kids to do, but not at the expense of your health for the rest of your life. I'm not sure it will die off as soon as he speculated, but when players are saying they wouldn't play if they had it to do over again, that's something.

It's a great player saying it too. There's definitely a change coming.

Your definition of great is really generous. Shola was really good too.

Would the NFL players be better off without helmets? Seems guys put their head first into a lot of tackles which they probably wouldn't without them

Probably, but they're used to using their heads from age 6, so if you took their helmets away now you'd just have a killing field.

I think there's going to be 22 Petr Cech's running around on an NFL field in our lifetimes.

Not for long.  Natural selection and all that.

So, you're saying that yes, it would be much better? At least there would be something mildly interesting happening.

NFL needs change at the grass roots level to take hold before they can do anything substantial and that's probably not going to happen. Players seem way more aware of the risks now, and there's a lot less head to head contact outside of line play, so it's getting better, but there will always be substantial risk. It will get to the point where people that normally chose football will choose baseball or soccer as B-More said. The talent pool for the other US sports is going to receive some tremendous athletes.

NFL needs to change a lot of things at the grassroots level. Due to the concussion awareness, less kids are playing the game. Football (soccer) is the highest participated sport in the USA now and the numbers will only increase. A lot of this has to do with the health risks of playing American Football versus Association Football. I can foresee in a generation, the NFL's overall quality of play being far less due to a smaller grassroots player pool (maybe more foreign players entering the draft too).

Hahaha need to make the most of the vast player pool and resources first before that happens!

Errr. No.

As for the comments about no helmets for American Football.  Concussion rates and serious injuries would go up, IMO.  It's nothing like Rugby in how the game is controlled and methodical.  You have people running in all different directions, all fixated on the ball, from a standing start, to full sprint.  A lot of the time, this is over long distances.  It's 0-100 in seconds.  Every deep pass over the middle, would probably involve someone being stretchered off   Plus all of the collisions at the line, blitzing players getting blindsided, crackbacks etc etc.

Beren's favourite team have it right when it comes to tackling:

You're laughing but that could happen if you get in gear.  We need to start beefing up our curling league or some shit you lot won't be interested in for another 100 years or so.

I like how the main argument about this is lack of excitment, you guys realise that Leicester who were dead last by about 5 point this time last year are currently joint top, the current premier league champions are in 15th, and about half the league could get drawn into a relegation fight, a three horse race for the title, and about 4 teams going for the champions leagues. That's all happening this season.

Yeah, it's the worst year in recent memory for this argument. In Mike's defense, this thread is a few years old.

Next: The top 4 in the Grand National fight it out in a 5 furlong sprint.

The league has always been a 9 month race over 36-42 games. The highest points score at the end wins. The problem with the League is they have allowed it to be spoiled by weakness. They should have brought in a salary cap, absolutely no doubt, to allow it to be a healthy competition. Playoffs wouldn't achieve that.

 And despite all that shit, money will restore order and we'll have nothing to show for it. You like Leicester being up there? Upstarts every year in playoff sports. Novelty in the EPL is business as usual in US sports.
