5 mil is a release clause but two teams can still try and offer more then tgat to secure the player.

Oh dear, that's a bit of a stinker right there.

Correct. For example Everton offer £5m and we offered £7m to secure the player. Wigan and the player then split the extra couple of million between themselves making us more likely to sign him.

If we meet the minimum release then Wigan have to let us talk to Kone. We could offer more but it'd be pointless as its then up to the player to decide, which will be based on wages, signing on fees and the state of the club he's going to.

The only thing Everton have is that Martinez is better than Pardew. Depends on how important that is to Kone. In any even, it seemed like he was already 'set to' go there before we 'joined the race'.

I don't think Everton is massively more attractive, just because they had a better season last time around.

They're far more stable despite the change of managers. They'll have a solid year with a good top 10 finish. We could just as easy be in the relegation zone by Christmas.

Maybe we can tempt him with a trick up our sleeve, like a few quality signings we're close to finalising.
