Kasper
5 mil is a release clause but two teams can still try and offer more then tgat to secure the player. Why? When 5m is enough to talk to the player...

Wallsendmag
5 mil is a release clause but two teams can still try and offer more then tgat to secure the player. Correct. For example Everton offer £5m and we offered £7m to secure the player. Wigan and the player then split the extra couple of million between themselves making us more likely to sign him. LRD
Why do you want to offer Wigan more? Surely you rather pay the 5m and offer that extra 2m to Kone and his agents?

AyeDubbleYoo
We might end up paying more than the minimum overall, but it wouldn't be in transfer fee.

Ste
If we meet the minimum release then Wigan have to let us talk to Kone. We could offer more but it'd be pointless as its then up to the player to decide, which will be based on wages, signing on fees and the state of the club he's going to. Ste
I think we'd have to offer ridiculous wages to get him to come here over Everton. Makes a lot of sense for him to go there.
AyeDubbleYoo
The only thing Everton have is that Martinez is better than Pardew. Depends on how important that is to Kone. In any even, it seemed like he was already 'set to' go there before we 'joined the race'. I don't think Everton is massively more attractive, just because they had a better season last time around. Ste
They're far more stable despite the change of managers. They'll have a solid year with a good top 10 finish. We could just as easy be in the relegation zone by Christmas. Maybe we can tempt him with a trick up our sleeve, like a few quality signings we're close to finalising.
