Jack Colback (now a free agent)

Whenever Tiote gets in the opposition half he either blasts the ball over the bar, makes tippy tap passes back to whoever passed the ball to him while standing stationary or turns around and passes it back to one of our defenders. Colback is more useful.

Tiote should be sat in front of our two centre backs, winning it and giving it easy. Unfortunately Pardew sees him as some sort of playmaker.

Tiote's the defensive midfielder in a team leaking goals for fun. He can't create, gets nervous on the ball, doesn't contribute offensively, commits stupid fouls and regularly loses the opposition midfielder making a run into our half. He's been better than he was last year but that was because he had a truly terrible last year. If Colback gives us five games like he's given Sunderland today, that'll be more valuable than what Tiote has given us this season.

You do realise they play completely different roles right. Anita and colback in mid? Weak as p*ss. And I like Anita

Liverpool have played Gerrard and Henderson in CM for the past ten games. They've won them all. The days of 'strong' central midfielders who can only tackle and contribute nothing offensively are done. Players like Tiote are an anachronism.

and they're not that good defensively shock horror, the difference is we won't have a world class striker and a very very effective striker to bail us out like that.

No, the real difference is they have a very good football manager and we have Mike Bassett.

having the world class players helps, we had a world class player for a few years too and look how quickly its all fallen apart without him

And we're even worse defensively.

How about having someone who can control a ball, make some forward passes and move into space to receive the ball rather than have useless defensive 'hardmen' who's only skill is collecting yellow cards while we concede 2, 3 and 4 game in game out.

They are rare but still needed even in good teams. Look at Flamini at Arsenal. He has only scored one goal with no assists but he has been one of their most important players in the first half of their season.

it would be lovely if we could get such a player but we don't have one like that-we did and he and Tiote were one of the best midfield combinations in the league.

 These kind of comments always amuse me, there's more than 1 way to play the game.

I don't massively like Tiote or anything, but he's a solid defensive midfielder.

We might get more from our midfield if we didn't have someone who couldn't make an offensive pass playing every game for us. Colback and Anita would be 'weak' but we'd have far more of the ball, more intelligent movement and passing and we'd probably score a few more goals. Would we concede more? Is that even fucking possible? We have a 'defensive beast' Tiote playing CM for us and we're conceding goals by the bucket.

Who knows, with Tiote not playing and someone like Colback playing instead, we might fluke a goal or two and might win a game or two. Who knows.

Colback might not be a world beater, maybe he's not even a very good player, but he's way ahead of everybody else erve played in centre midfield since Cabaye left.

He's not. He's just not shit. He'd be our 4th best midfielder behind Tiote, Anita & Sissoko.

He's not though.

In any case we need central midfielders, at least a couple, and absolutely none of them should be Jack Colback.

Yet every good team in every decent league are gravitating towards a style of play that revolves around controlling the ball. Who's the defensive hardman playing for Real or Barca or Bayern or Liverpool or City? They have central midfielders who are good passers of the ball, first and foremost, and then they look for athleticism and the ability to control space. They don't have guys running around kicking players right, left and center, conceding stupid fouls and contributing nothing to the attacking play.

Again, people look at one game and decide he's a good player

I've watched a lot of his career, from the two loans at Ipswich to breaking through at Sunderland at left back under Keane. He's very tidy, he'll rarely lose possession but he isn't threatening enough in the final third. As a free transfer, I'd take him but we still need to strengthen there.

Shelvey is a good player, ffs. I didn't base that on yesterdays showing.

Don't care what anyone says god help the short term future of this club if this is the standard of player we are after  :embarrassed:

That point wasn't really directly aimed at you, more of a general point. From what I've seen of Shelvey he shows some good things but is wasteful at times

We aren't Real or Barca or Bayern or Liverpool or City though, and neither are the very vast majority of clubs in world football. That's not to say we shouldn't aspire to be, but if we are we're going to need a lot more than "players who can control the ball." We need genuine top class players, regardless of what talents make them such. I realise you missed Chelsea off your little list though, you know, Champions League semi-finalists and 2nd in the league? Playing Ramires who this season just likes to run around the pitch kicking people.

The fact is both Gerrard and Henderson are better players than Tiote. Daniel Sturridge is a better footballer than Ricky Lambert, that doesn't mean players like Ricky Lambert "are an anachronism".

Wish the fuckers who constantly shout "shoot" at Tiote would curl up and die like, its treated like a joke but he's obviously thick enough to actually be influenced by it.

Who the hell has mentioned Ricky Lambert? He scores goals, how is he ever going to be an anachronism? Ramires isn't even close to being someone who runs around kicking people. He's part of their counter attack, he is fast and athletic with a decent control and regularly makes runs on the ball into the opposition half. A better example would be Mikel but he's very good on the ball and controls space very well, quite the opposite of Tiote.

These days CMs aren't needed to run around and kick people, they either control space and play it easy or they're all rounders who can contribute offensively. Tiote is neither. He can't pass, he's nervous on the ball and he regularly lets people walk pass him into space, forcing our whole midfield to turn and catch up to their runner.
