Turnbull2000 Posted yesterday at 08:57 Share Posted yesterday at 08:57 Longstaff remains the sort of player we need for the domestic cups, surely? Don't think we can be using the likes of Isak, Tonali, Botman etc in the early rounds.

Longstaff will likely be utilised in the cups and against lesser sides, etc. I'll be honest, I feel like the word "utilised" is doing alot of heavy lifting. I don't think Longstaff can be utilised for anything anymore. His head has completely checked out. He feels under appreciated and its time he moved on. We could be playing a league 2 side and I wouldn't have any confidence in Longstaff. I just can't face another year of: Longstaff gets caught in possession/gives the ball away, the crowd groans, then Longstaff gives it that lost puppy dog look. I like the lad, I love that he's from Newcastle but for the love of God let him go.

Longstaff needs time to build up his confidence before he is of any use based on previous experience. Pretty useless when he comes on for some minutes or a game here and there. Lush Vlad Posted yesterday at 11:55 Share Posted yesterday at 11:55 If he was a plug and play type, that regularly got minutes at the end of games, with the odd start chucked in. I'd have no issue. But it has become quite apparent that he is out of favour, he doesn't really fit in the system that well these days, either. Plus, he also needs a run of games to get his form up. He isn't a super sub type or someone that comes on after 60-70 mins and performs really well and helps us see the game out. I can't think of loads of players like that, TBF. Off the top of my head, Endo at Liverpool plays that role a lot. When factoring all of that in, it doesn't make sense to keep him. The last game I can remember him starting was at home to Bromley and he genuinely looked worse than a lot of their players.
ponsaelius Posted yesterday at 12:10 Share Posted yesterday at 12:10 Yeah I've made the point quite a bit that he's basically the worst type of squad player now that we've progressed beyond him starting because he really can't just slot in and do a job here and there. And I love the lad for his attitude and the success he had in Eddie's first couple of seasons - genuinely always been a defender of him. Willock is not quite as bad for this but tbh we have the same issues with him needing a run in the team to get going. His issues are more physical than mental/technical but it's the same problem ultimately. We talk about squad depth but for a while we've had a pretty big squad but lacking quality. We'd be much better off moving both Longstaff and Willock on and consolidating the money to bring somebody new who can properly compete with the first choice three, play 40-50 games a season, and slot into any of the midfield roles comfortably. Even if it means on paper we have 5 midfielders rather than the 6 currently. The above is even more viable if we brought in legit competition for Hall so he could become a midfield option too. andycap Posted yesterday at 12:21 Share Posted yesterday at 12:21 So if we were to sell him how would it effect our champions league squad? He's homegrown we don't have any other on the books.

aussiemag Posted yesterday at 12:29 Share Posted yesterday at 12:29 Right now I would keep Longstaff as a 6th choice and sell Willock.

Numbers wise we don't look too bad. But when you look at how many genuine options we have, where you'd be happy for them to start or play a good chunk of games over a season or that Howe regularly relies on. We only really have what, 15-16 players that are good enough? Edited yesterday at 12:51 by Lush Vlad
