Keefaz
There's a Zidane thing tonight on BBC2 has it been on before and if so was it good? It's meant to be canny: Zidane: a 21st Century Portrait 12:50am - 2:20am BBC2 Following the lead of Hellmuth Costard's 1971 study of George Best, Football like Never Before, this audacious documentary tracks Zinédine Zidane for the duration of a La Liga game between Real Madrid and Villareal in April 2005. Technically, the film draws attention to itself far too often, with its tricksy shifts between camera angles (courtesy of Se7en cinematographer Darius Khondji) and distances. But, as a study in sporting concentration and an avant-garde experiment in spatial disorientation, it's as compelling as it is impressive. Particularly striking is the unswerving intensity that seems to isolate Zidane from his team-mates, as he rarely calls for the ball or issues instructions throughout the match. Indeed, he remains emotionless - apart from a grin at Roberto Carlos just before joining the goalmouth mêlée that results in him being sent off. Revealing the flaws as well as the genius, this is clearly a portrait of an artist at work.

Keefaz
It's clearly meant for some twaty art installation somewhere, but it was quite interesting in its way. Surprised how little he said in the course of a match and actually how little of the ball he really saw.

Yeah, I can understand how some people might have found the film to be a bit boring, but I also found it quite interesting. Was it just me or did he say "hey" quite a lot throughout? Nevertheless, the man is a class act.

gazza ladra
Decent documentary aired on ESPN a couple nights back here in the US called The Two Escobars about football in Colombia in the 90s, the drug cartels, and the killing of Andrés Escobar. Really recommend catching it if you can if only to see the interviews with Asprilla, Valderrama, Higuita. What a terrific group of players they had. I hadn't realized that the players had received death threats right from the beginning of the tournament. Something about the players being killed if the wrong player started the opening match versus Romania. A lot of drug money was being laundered through the Colombian league clubs and cartels were competing to ensure that their players-- the one's contracted to one club or another--- and not those of their competitors started and were put in the shop window---it wasall about increasing their sale value. Pretty sure that Brian Glanville still maintains that the Colombians threw the match against the USA.
