Exactly not sure how anyone can keep giving him a free pass when it comes to the midfield, it’s been a shambles for months and he clearly has no idea how to integrate Tonali again this season.

It’s not a free pass. He’s paid for his pass. Paid good money, as it happens.

Why did he start Tonali most games before the ban, if he was not a Howe signing? Not even Bruno started in the first 10 games, and Howe said it was because he was from a different league. Howe had high expecations of Tonali, that's why he wanted him. You're clutching at straws trying to hold on to your narrative here.

Bruno signed in the winter window Tonali had the summer to bed in.

Had the summer to bed in? Howe doesn't bed in players over the summer if they are not even a Howe signing.

I come out with it because some of our fanbase are wildly fickle and reductionist to a comical degree. And others only seem to pipe up when we lose.

Isak and Gordon had multiple guilt edge chances again tonight and missed them all again. At least Isak can excuse himself overall because he's had a spell of form, but his finishing was still terrible tonight, and Gordon’s has been a joke all season.

People knock xG, but it's generally indicative of chances being created. We've had a draw and 2 losses now where our general play has created enough to win and our finishing has let us down. It's a problem, but I don't see much with our creation that points to Howe's approach.

Did we have a shot on target or meaningful chance at all in the second half? This is his team, his approach.

Not sure there's much to level at Howe tonight, we outplayed West Ham in the first half and let in a stupid goal. We played well until they scored the second (against the run of play again) and then we got a bit desperate, started rushing everything and they settled down.

I probably wouldn't have played Joelionton on the right mind, I don't understand that one. But I was fully behind the Barnes sub. Haven't seen the second goal back so don't know if Barnes not tracking was a factor.

Bringing on Murphy and Wilson is kind of pointless, especially Murphy. But I guess at that point you have to try something.

Tonali had the summer to integrate with the team. Bruno was brought in in the winter matches.

You don't even believe yourself that it wasn't a Howe signing at this point. You're arguing just for the sake of arguing now, so this is pointless.

We’re 10th. At what point would you be critical of Howe? Behind Ipswich maybe?

One of the reasons I say we look a poorly coached team is that we run out of ideas visibly.  I think most well coached teams keep trying what they’ve been coached to do even if it’s not working well.  We play with a lot of energy and impetus. But when that faded we don’t know what to do.

I think they run out of confidence in the patterns. There's only so many times you can headbutt a wall before you start doubting the bricks are gonna start tumbling. And, thanks to experience, we fast forward through that confidence drop now compared to how long it would take a year ago.

I also think he should start, so maybe you are misunderstanding me. I was saying that Howe wanted him badly enough for us to pay £55m for him. So therefore either he should start him, or in the case where he doesn't fit into our system etc, then that's also on him as he was the one who wanted him.

Your opinion is always valid. It’s just usually wrong with admirable intentions.

If we'd won to go 6th would it be OK to back him?

There's only 4 points between 10th and 3rd, league position right now isn't a factor for me.

I agree.

Bigger picture though, if there was one thing I would change with the club right now (a thing that I can level at Eddie to change), I would want us to be a better team. More than the sum of our parts. We had that a few seasons ago but now we're too reliant on a few purples and if they don't show up (Bruno for much of the first couple of months, Gordon pretty much all season) we aren't as potent and lack a cutting edge up front and if it's someone in defense, like a Schar having a bad match, we're definitely not as solid as we should be. Not long after Eddie came in he had us playing as a unit and playing well above of where we should've been playing with the talent we had on the pitch. I just feel like we have lost that, unfortunately, and it's up to him to bring that back.

Still don’t think he was a Howe signing.

Surely you can see that how specific your question is sort of points to what I mean about the reductionism?

Their 2nd goal put the pin in us. With proper finishing from our supposed star players until that point, the game is completely different. Even after that, when they gained confidence and we lost ours, this is how the game looked overall.

I couldn't put it any better than these stats tbh. They scored 2 from 0 big chances and we scored 0 from 2 big chances.

When you've a 25man squad,  big chunk of whom aren't premier league quality, you're going to play an Italian international. He plays Longstaff and Murphy regularly which obviously he'd rather not. Not even saying he doesn't rate him just don't think left to his own devices Howe would have signed him.

The future prospects of any manager are always pinned to his players and the results they get, that's just how it works. In the last few years Howe has received an unbelievable amount of praise for how he and his team have performed, he's been the manager and the team have looked good and got the results and he's been the golden boy and rightly so.

I don't think you can just switch that around and give his (currently underperforming) players all of the stick and he walks away without valid criticism, you can't have it both ways. If the players and team are playing poorly but he gets no criticism but if the players and team are playing well then he gets the praise too? I love Eddie and wat him to stay and build big things here but he's not immune from criticism, no manager is. Tonight was a disaster, a total shitshow and he's the bloke in charge. People can, and have, had a pop at Isak and Gordon for their performances but if they're fair game then so is the bloke in charge. He got it wrong tonight and made it worse and worse imo. He's not infallible and he's got to take the lion's share of the responsibility

His subs at times are a real concern and so far he clearly has no idea how to beat teams playing a certain way at home. Teams that play a low block (and West Ham weren’t exactly even doing that tonight) and we just have no answer to it at the moment. We are terrible at creating and converting chances.

Allright, stay ignorant then. I'll leave the quote a second time, just in case.

“We pursued him for a long, long time, paid a big fee for him because I fell in love watching him play the game last year."

I get this. But that’s the intensity and such.  But from a pass and move view, how do we plan on breaking down that low block? I see Tino get into positions high and wide and I just know an awful cross is coming. Do we expect to score from those? He keeps moving wide forwards around - are there particular things they are meant to do in each position?
