He's clearly of the opinion that he doesn't want an overhaul - six new players was "too many" in his own words. What do you mean by it not being his fault?

I mean it’s pretty easy to figure out. He doesn’t have full say on what happens this summer.

There’s a whole team now and it’ll be their call. And as always there are hundred of mitigating circumstances, even more so during a WC summer.

Also six first team players is too many if you ask me.

Could be necessary though, depending on outgoings.

That would just show we've learned nothing.

There's an argument he's still our best CB. Definitely missed him since he's been out.

Right, so if it was entirely up to him, we'd be bringing in less than six you reckon?

Doesn’t sound like he’s in favour of the big rebuild we are much needing.

so now the numbers were the problem, not the quality of the players.

I mean he’s kinda right. We had too many first teamers to bring in and had to settle on some shit ones.

we need a keeper, 2 fullbacks, a decent midfielder, a winger, and a striker..... just for starters.

a CB if Schar leaves.

Had major doubts we'd do enough in the summer to affect a turn around to see anything other than another transitional middling season next year anyway but pretty bummed out that it looks like were not even going to try before the window even opens.  Was hoping we'd shift at least six players to then replace, wasn't even thinking additions.

He’s generally right in what he says though. Mass change, where you replace multiple players, is not really something you should be aiming for.

However, sometimes you don’t have any choice, and as Forest and the mackems have proved recently, it can be relatively successful.

It’s general mismanagement and a lack of squad building added to our disastrous summer window that has us at this point though.

Even areas we supposedly strengthened like up front and RW will need work. We need a GK, possibly FBs a CB. Ageing squad has been allowed to grow old together.

We didn't have to at all.

I don’t disagree out of hand or anything, but I feel like six starters is a pretty hard mix to get right no matter who the manager is.

Ideally don’t waste 200 odd million on players that look nowhere near good enough and spend most of their time

on the bench.

It wasn’t the number of players signed. It was how ill suited they look to the system if you’re being kind. Crap if you’re not. Along with Howe’s reluctance to consistently play any of them bar Thiaw. It’s been a total disaster looking back.

Settle? You not remember how many turned us down?

Doesn't mean you automatically have to buy shit players.  Most clubs cant even look to fish in the same waters as us and managed to dredge up far better players with far smaller nets than we we fetched up with. We bought better than last summer plenty of the time under Ashley.

I don’t fully disagree, the club did a terrible job, and I’ll never ever understand why we bought either Elanga or Woltemade, but it was still too many players to bring in during one window. Signing a right winger 3 years ago like we needed would have sorted part of it.

Great point. We were able to find golden players in Cabaye, Ben Arfa, Wijnaldum etc.

No reason we cant find quality players because top targets go elsewhere. Thats what top scouting is all about

How is he ever suppose to succeed in some people’s eyes when they have dogshit takes like this?

Not that him not wanting a ton of new players is a “mitigating circumstance” but what manager have you ever heard/seen that has even wished for a complete squad overhaul, let alone gotten it?

The summer is going to be super interesting, not least of which is because the worlds biggest football tournament happens during this one.

I think we needed the depth to cope with CL. Quality of the signings is a different matter though.

It was said very tongue in cheek tbh. He clearly sees things in some of our players that we don't but he also has to understand that we're a big club with big ambitions. Wanting to keep players who aren't good enough because you trust them isn't big club mentality. We're also a business - if we get decent offers for older fringe players we can replace with younger ones with higher ceilings, he has to be prepared to bend a bit.

There's some needs, but also a lot of wants there.

What would you disagree with on that list (I’m assuming we lose Gordon and one of Tonali or Tino)?

Yeah, I'd agree probably agree with more of them if we knew who the outgoings were.
