It was how ill suited they look to the system if you’re being kind. Crap if you’re not. Along with Howe’s reluctance to consistently play any of them bar Thiaw. I don’t fully disagree, the club did a terrible job, and I’ll never ever understand why we bought either Elanga or Woltemade, but it was still too many players to bring in during one window. We were able to find golden players in Cabaye, Ben Arfa, Wijnaldum etc. No reason we cant find quality players because top targets go elsewhere. Not that him not wanting a ton of new players is a “mitigating circumstance” but what manager have you ever heard/seen that has even wished for a complete squad overhaul, let alone gotten it? He clearly sees things in some of our players that we don't but he also has to understand that we're a big club with big ambitions. Wanting to keep players who aren't good enough because you trust them isn't big club mentality. We're also a business - if we get decent offers for older fringe players we can replace with younger ones with higher ceilings, he has to be prepared to bend a bit.
