Whilst not wanting to absolve Pardew of blame for 12/13, the summer window that preceded it completely threw us to the dogs. And for all the many negative aspects of Pardew’s tenure, at least 11/12 is something solid in the positive column. McClaren has absolutely fuck all. Like nothing. Apart from maybe those two games where we beat Liverpool and Spurs back to back.

Apart from maybe those two games where we beat Liverpool and Spurs back to back. The transfer window was poor, but that squad was still miles better and more balanced than 15/16. Even after we splurged money in January we still ended up being bailed out by Jose Bosingwa in the second last match of the season. I've seen some bad performances in my time, but I've never seen anything as bad as those 0-3 and 0-6 home losses that season as well.

I've seen some bad performances in my time, but I've never seen anything as bad as those 0-3 and 0-6 home losses that season as well. The second half of 2013-14 was as bad as the worst of 2012-13. Whilst nowt comes close to the 0-6 (worst experience I’ve ever had watching us, that), the second mackem 0-3 and 0-4 defeats at home to Sherwood’s Spurs and Moyes’ Man Utd were tragically bad. The first mackem 0-3 in 2012-13 whilst dreadful was 3 counter attacks and 3 strikes from outside the box. Plus we had an equaliser wrongfully disallowed. 2015-16 may have been a slightly inferior squad but that team going down is indefensible. Benitez showed the bones of a decent side were there from the Swansea win onwards. Additionally, the 0-1 loss at home in the League Cup to Sheffield Wednesday who made 10 changes and the 0-3 loss at home to Leicester (following that up with a 5-1 loss to Pardew’s Palace) were as bad as anything served up under Pardew. HaydnNUFC
I do also admit that 2012-13 was the start of the diminishing of the club and of expectations, setting in stone Ashley’s modus operandi of never challenging for anything. Not the cups, not Europe, nowt. Just stay in the league at minimal cost and fuck everything else off as anything else increases the chances of injuries therefore relegation. That was down to Pardew’s shtick that season and Ashley bought it. And a lot of the fans did as well.

deejeck
Struggle to find any negative feeling towards McClaren tbh. Aye, it all went to shit but he and a few others are evidence that if you conduct yourself in a respectable manner and give the job a proper go then you'll leave on reasonable terms. The likes of Souness, Bruce and Allardyce are disliked for a reason - if you treat the support with distain and blame us for your own shortcomings then of course we're going to give you a hard time. Shame that this excuse will only carry you so far - we, as NUFC supporters, can't be to blame for every job that you were subsequently shite at. If just being a decent bloke and trying your best is good enough to get a pass, I don’t know what we’re doing. As unpalatable as it might be, I’d rather have a right cunt that didn’t get us relegated. Fortunately, we’ve now managed to get ourselves someone who appears to combine being an excellent human with being an elite manager. Norwich game aside, it was poor under McClaren and he should've been sacked sooner. For whatever ever reason though, he just doesn't register on the hatred scale for me. As far as I'm aware, he's never badmouthed the support and that's probably the difference.

I suppose it depends how much you let behaviour and character feed into it. For me, McClaren was unquestionably the worst performing manager in recent history. However, I suppose I should accept some people may feel that the off-field stuff around other managers was so unpalatable, it overtakes the fact that they actually performed better than him.
