It didn't take him 12 years to "jump ship".  Don't be silly.  He was happy enough for eleven and half years but when things got a bit tough he couldnt wait to fuck off.  That is my point.  My other point is Pope is/was far superior to Given which this thread is about actually.

We were ran by Ashley and managed by Kinnear and were heading only one way. Why shouldn’t be leave for a club like Man City that were on the up when they came sniffing? The move didn’t work out for him in the end ultimately but he owed Newcastle nothing.

I don't blame him for jumping ship, I would've done similar.

100%, we were an absolute joke at the time he left. From the CL years under Robson to where we got to when he left in early 2009 was a hell of a decline and he played behind some rotten defences and some awful managers before he finally decided to move on.

Can I just wave the white flag now?  Talk about ganging up on someone.  I get it, you all loved Shay Given and I thought he was MASSIVELY  overrated.  Okay?  The thread is about Pope ffs.

Yes he did owe Newcastle.

Given's command of his box was poor, his kicking wasn't great (although this is a feature of literally every NUFC keeper I can remember ) and he had a period in his later years of being beaten from long distance a lot. Hardly ever saved pens either. That all said his shot stopping was so, so good and he was left so exposed by the defences he played behind it made up for a lot of those deficiencies.

I don't like the idea that he was desperate to jump ship when there was about 5 years of shite between us being in Europe and when he eventually left. He gave us his best years and arguably could have got himself a bigger move had he not stuck around during some of our lean pre-Ashley years.

I don't have an issue with the Given / Pope debate, I think it's quite close and would understand someone leaning either way tbh. I took issue with you saying Given couldn't wait to jump ship when really he was someone who'd given his best years to the club and was clearly at the end of his tether with the shit show we were when he left - Ashley, Kinnear, the Liverpool 1-5 home game.

And after the 1-5 defeat he couldn't wait to piss off.  Boo hoo.  My point well made by your good self Pilko.  I thank you Sir.

You never mentioned "after the 1-5" originally though, did you? You just said a player who made nearly 500 appearances for us couldn't wait to jump ship  goodnight and enjoy the wine.

Given knew the club wasn't trying to compete anymore so jumped ship to try and win something before his career ended which is fair enough.

So we agree he "jumped ship", didn't win owt and his time on Newcastle was/is soured because he got a few more quid elsewhere?

I'm not to fussed with him leaving mind. It was long overdue do you not think?

This. The club weren't for matching Given's ambitions, or for even having any ambition whatsoever. We were heading one way and he wasn't hanging around for it, and I don't blame him because he was far too good to be playing in the Championship. He was here for 12 years and it probably broke his heart to witness what we'd become under Ashley, to suggest he isn't a Newcastle man and a club legend is just daft.

Every player since 1969 hasn’t won anything at Newcastle. Are all those who have left for more money since then soured too? Especially those who never reached 12 years of service?
