I get that the kid can finish and stats look impressive, but this tends to be when he’s given acres to cut in on his right foot, if he’s up against a fast, physical full back he’s got no chance.

Just doesn’t cut it for me, fell over at Arsenal when through in the left channel, lacks pace, physically weak and lacks ability on the ball to be a top player.

I really don't wanna rule the kid out. I think he's of the level we are at so to speak with regards to the squad. He isn't good enough to keep an in form Gordon out, but he is enough to keep pressure on Gordon. If I were him and wanted to excel I be thinking what can I do on the right to cement a place tbh. But with how Murphy is currently playing, it'd be a tough ask. Folk won't like to admit it, but Murphy is up there with Gordon if not better this season, so far.

He has one perfect role for us, thats the last 20-30 minutes of a game when we are ahead or are happy with a draw. Should never be starting games, especially those we are expecting to win.

If thats enough to justify a £30m price tag is an open question. Maybe not considering our current squad. Probably better ways we could spend that money to improve the squad. Didnt sound like our reserve players out there today impressed alot.

He is presently a leader of our second string in terms of ability, for me.

Eh? His best utility is when we need a goal, not to hang onto a draw.

Dont think he has the ability to score lots of goals against teams with a low block.

Its not hanging on to a draw i meant, but that he can snatch a win if the other team is pressing for one themselves.

Not sure I agree with this. Give him half a yard he can score. Probably moreso than Gordon, dare I say it.

Gordon offers far more though in our general play.

He's got a good shot from outside the box. I think he's struggling atm as we're either shagged and hanging on, or are out of sight by the time he's on the pitch.

I like the lad and he offers something different to our team when he gets games.

Earlier this season he was bang in form but had to sit on the bench because gordon couldn't be dropped.

And I worried that by the time he does get a game his form would of dropped off.

Just not sure he does enough other than finishing (at which he is incredible); not a very dynamic player. Doesn’t seem to have kicked on physically like other players under Howe. Canny enough squad option but not sure that’s what you want for the price.

There was absolutely a spell where I considered whether he should be dropped for Gordon like. Gordon was nowhere near his best.

I think his game time is so limited now that he doesn't get the time to impress he must feel he has to smash a few in every game.

He should be able to be a starter on the right, his competition there is Murphy and Miggy, he should be able to fight for a starting position. I don't know but it seems like he is only interested in playing if it's on the left and give him the opportunity to cut inside and score. He should be doing everything he can to try to convince Eddie that he can make the right side his because he's not going to dislodge Gordon from the left.

Earlier in the season he was arguably our best player with isak Bruno Gordon joelinton stinking the place up and he still wasn't favoured to start on either wing.

Murphy has been one of the best players in the league since Brentford like

I like Murphy, and I've defended him in the past when a lot of people have been on his back. I think he can be really effective player and a very useful squad player for us and is in a good run of form, but he is also incredibly frustrating and wasteful a lot of the time, still. Barnes should be seeing the right side as a position to aim to make his own, but I get the impression he sees it as somewhere he doesn't want to play.

Because he's more of an inside forward and Gordon is a bit more versatile. They are kind of similar though so I can see both maybe not wanting to play right.

But Gordon is first choice for the left and it's clear that is not going to change, earlier in the season when Barnes was on fire and Gordon was struggling to find form Gordon was still first choice. If he wants starts he's going to have to adapt to a different position.

Not sure he suited. Gordon has played right this year. Played RW at Everton too. I agree though that he now seems entrenched at LW or backup ST (Gordon) so if Barnes wants more minutes, he plays RW. Not sure that he is well suited.

There's players who look like they can operate on both flanks, bu t Barnes hasn't shown any appetite nor aptitude for that. In fact you can narrow down where he is effective to a somewhat small patch of the field
