How is this ‘matching bid’ thing actually a thing?

Like surely anybody can match any bid they like if they’ve got the finance?

Is it basically that they just have to be informed of any bid so they can decide to match it if they want?

Yeah they get notified and invited to bid.

It’s a clause they Chelsea have from the sale. If they did choose to match the bid the choice would be with the player. They won’t match the bid regardless so nothing to worry about.

How’s that even a clause? Surely any club is free to match a bid

Aye of course they are but for Chelsea it’s a contractual agreement, it protects them from overpaying if they want him back and Palace have to accept so they can’t create a bidding war using Chelsea for example.

Yeah but Newcastle can then up their bid

Because not every deal is in the public domain.

I think these things are well known within the game thru agents etc. just because it’s not known publically doesn’t mean other clubs don’t know

Yeah they could but generally you  wouldn’t want to pay more and would let the player choose at that point as your essentially bidding against yourself

Chelsea have a clause in the deal they may made stating they can match any accepted bid. If they want. Kind of like they have first refusal on him sort of thing.

I'm guessing this is to protect a sell-on clause, but surely Palace will just offset their valuation regardless of who bids.

That's still part of the point in them though. If we'd done this out of the blue and all done and dusted in private like we did with Bruno and Isak, then Chelsea have no recourse. With a clause like this it means they're not caught on the hop missing out on a player they might want.

I fucking hate Chelsea, but it makes sense

I presume it means:

1. Chelsea have to be informed of any accepted bid for the player so they can't be blindsided

2. If team A accepts a bid for a player and then Chelsea bid the same amount, Team A can't go, 'nah we'd rather sell to them but if you offer a bit more we'll accept.'

That is a bit of an odd thing to put out if someone's going mind.

Think it's just a 'business as usual, if you want him you'll have to pay' thing. In fairness, you could say the thing about our recent Gordon posts...

And we have.

Could mean nothing, but I doubt it. In terms of PR and messaging, you don't do something like that if you know a player is about to leave.
