I don't think the release clause is really a factor.

I also don't expect the club to just go and pay the maximum for every player. We don't have the money to be doing that.

Totally agree other than in this instance - according to the usual hacks, we’d agreed a fee which was close to the release clause.  Given the value of the clause was so low, it seems a bit daft not to have gone for it.

I’ve no criticism of the club re being gazumped by Liverpool- they’re bigger and more attractive - pretty much every player on earth would prefer them, PSR or not.

I just feel like in this case we didn't need to pay the release clause precisely. We agreed a deal that was OK with all parties.

You have to pay tax on release clauses in Spain.

That seems to be the case - tbh if we didn’t need to make so many signings this summer this one would be a bit annoying and then we could shrug it off.  The concern would be that we can’t afford to waste too much time on dead ends.

On buy-out clauses, not release clauses.

The release clause is pretty well known, no-one here needs to pretend to be an expert at all.  It’s all just opinions.

Wasn’t about release clause but many telling the club how they should do business, what they have done wrong etc. based on zero knowledge of what actually happened.

There is a release clause for £35m.  We decide to haggle.  This takes weeks of valuable time.

The issue isn’t getting gazumped - the issue is farting about over relative pennies.   If we’d simply triggered the release clause we would’ve had our answer weeks ago and would’ve moved on to new targets by now.  So the Munoz deal is 100% a speed issue.

Agreed. No issues with getting gazumped in theory. But dallying over a player with a low-release clause is the issue. What are the tax implications of activating the release clause?

In this case, I also think the dallying made us vulnerable to getting gazumped by a club that didn't have a manager at the beginning of the month.

If we triggered on June 5 as reported our interest, we’d have known in days if he was coming here or going to Liverpool. On June 18 we’d hopefully have signed a different Gordon replacement by now. The issue is we weren’t fast enough to end the negotiations with the club and allowed time for our deal to be shopped and stolen.

Agreed.

The idea that speed doesn't matter in this type of deal is stupid.

Fair enough - but it’s still just opinions, whether supportive or critical.  We don’t know because we’re not in the room of course - I suppose it’s more the number of times this has occurred and there’s a pattern forming.

My personal view is that I have some sympathy for the transfer team re the ability of the cartel clubs to just gazump, I’m critical of the time it does seem to take them, I’m annoyed at whoever keeps leaking all this stuff to the gobshites in the local press (Hope, Edwards, Ryder etc), and I have questions about whether the ownership are ultimately responsible for a lot of the issues re getting transfers ‘over the line’ (is the approval process fast enough?)

Most of it is conjecture - but it’s hardly life or death stuff.  Conjecture about transfers and how football clubs are run have always existed in the five decades I’ve been around.

We knew other clubs were in the background and decided to spend weeks negotiating with Osasuna and Real Madrid.

If we had to pay an additional 20% in taxes it's about £5m total. If we think he's going to be worth £75m in 2 years - it's wasting time.

And if we did - we knew all fees and taxes before we bid (at least I hope so!)

And you can do that if you're Man City, Man Utd, Liverpool etc.  Not if you're NUFC, we don’t have much to offer barring a good coach, fans and decent money.  We're trying to play poker with a pair of sixes, and wondering why we are losing

If we think he's a £75m player in waiting and haggling over £5m, that's bad risk management.

Nearly all of our best signings we've paid a premium to land a top target. We also signed Isak in 4 days. That's conviction.

Tbf it’s not the end of the world if we have other targets lining up. In fact a well-functioned recruitment system should always have a lot of choices.

Wilson still has a lot of room to operate, if he is competent

I don’t see why haggling is so important when we haggled successfully. If the deal had fallen apart because we couldn’t agree a price it might be relevant.

Time is why - if we needed a player or two this summer it wouldn’t be an issue.  We need several - spending a couple of weeks haggling over buttons isn’t going to do us any good

Yeah, I suppose I just don’t think that this was a particularly long time.

If we were sitting here with 2 hot young things signed on 18 June we’d be laughing.

It just depends how many good players there are around for the same position I guess.

Definitely- and there’s plenty of time of course to get more in, so we might have a very different feel on 1 September.  The one caveat is that we know Howe likes having a full summer with the players - so it would be good to get business done sharpish.
