Its going to be a pure waste of time to bid for him, Man Ure want him then thats where he will go. What fkn chance do we have ?

If he goes anywhere it's likely to be Arsenal or Spurs, the mancs already have two established left backs...

Can we agree that it will not be to us though ? :D

It's not impossible, but unlikely...

...signing Bale I mean.

so the cred of this story flys out of the window...

So getting a story from a player at the club is not creditable? It has just been announced on local Radio . Radio Solent.

I'll reserve my judgement but 99% of people who say they have a source or know someone at a club are lying.

Look at past quotes when i have mentioned something about Saints. For example the story about them bidding for shola. 2 days later it was in the chronicle and the daily press. I hate liers mate as they waste my time. So I would not post on here to bullshit.

But..but..but...Roeder said he rated him, so we were definitely in public negotiations to sign him.

Apparently. bluelaugh.gif

But...but....but no one actually said that! :jesus: HTL claiming people said something they didn't SHOCKER!

Pots....kettles.....

Nice to see you admitting it at least, guess it would be too much to expect you not to say EXCATLY the same thing again in some other post.

I admitted it days ago, it's just as per normal you didn't understand it.

For once, JUST FOR ONCE can one of you (I don't care who) take the fucking moral high road and quit responding to every stupid fucking comment by the other?  This is a thread about Gareth Bale, not your internet e-ego.

Hurrah!

On Bale, we probably don't have the cash for a bidding war, and he's now in the nice position that once some bids are accepted he'll be able to negotiate the personal terms up by playing the clubs off against each other. So however good he is it looks like he'll be be a) overpriced and b) overpaid.

Sorry I agree and hold my hands up, I just bite when people make stupid pointless comments.

In regards to Bale I really don't think we can afford to gamble the amount he will cost for the age and experience that he has.

He is too young, if anything our last few games has proven is that we have a good crop of young defenders coming through we don't need an 18 year old we need a 28 year old with plenty of experience.  I think if he goes to Scum united then Heinze is worth a pop.

BBC running the story several hours after i said about it!

Southampton have offered highly-rated youngster Gareth Bale a deal extension after rejecting two Premiership club bids, reports BBC Radio Solent.

Manchester United are believed to have followed Tottenham in making a firm offer for Wales international Bale.

But Southampton hope to keep the 17-year-old full-back through to 2009 with a one-year contract extension.

The Championship club have also received inquiries from Newcastle, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Southampton, keen not to see Bale leave in similar circumstances to Arsenal striker Theo Walcott 12 months ago, are confident Bale will sign the extended contract.

But if the defender turns down the offer, they believe they will have to cash in and sell him, before his transfer value diminishes towards the end of his contract.

Unless he's a diehard Newcastle fan,  or we offer £20m,  I think its safe to say this is a lost course

You'd be astounded if I told you who wanted to join Newcastle United...

we might be one of the few clubs to offer him immediate first-team football, and roeder will no doubt boast about his record of bringing through youngsters. also, other clubs may not offer a lot of money straight-up and instead attach add-on fees, while we might just slap in a full up 6m pound bid.

SOUTHAMPTON are prepared to make Gareth Bale their highest paid player after turning down bids from Spurs and Manchester United.

Wales left-back Bale, 17, will be handed a new deal until 2009.

Saints dismissed Tottenham’s £3million bid before rejecting United’s £5m offer.

We had a spell of signing promising youngsters when SBR was in charge(Milner was one) and at that stage, we were still looked upon as a good bet for them to join - in the top 5 of the Prem, playing good football, Shearer still there etc. etc.

The old saying 'any mud thrown always sticks' comes to mind - NUFC has degenerated so much in reputation over the past 3 years that players like Bale will always pick Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool etc ahead of us if given the chance, so it is basically a waste of time trying to get into an auction against those clubs if they want the same player.

Only stability & success on the field will change this, and these 2 things will be a long time coming, so NUFCs only real hope is to keep developing its OWN youngsters - that's why Academies were so important to us, and should have merited prime consideration; you can't sign players outside the window either, which makes life difficult - in 1971, we signed Terry Mac from Bury, and the first time I saw him v Liverpool, it was obvious he was going to be a great player. He was right on the Scousers' doorstep too, and we pinched him because our scouts were quicker to the punch(he was only 20,000 pounds - imagine how much a similar youngster would cost today..!).Had the Transfer Window system been in place then, we may not have got him because they would have more time to assess the player.Don't forget, he was also a Scouser, so would probably have chosen them if given the choice. As it was, they had to pay us 175,000 for him in 1974 - big money in those days.

The Transfer Window system is biased in the favour of big, lazy Clubs - little Clubs with good Scouting systems cannot beat them to the punch as easily now.

not so sure ,after SWP's experience, glen johnsons etc i think a lot of youngsters would look for where their best opportunity would be.even then bale is a possible for man u as they have never settled on evra, heinze or silvestre at left back.

From the Journal

Newcastle's chances of signing two of the Football League's hottest young prospects appear to be fading amid massive competition from rival clubs.

Magpies manager Glenn Roeder admitted shortly before Christmas that Derby County midfielder Giles Barnes and Southampton defender Gareth Bale were both on his wishlist. It was an uncharacteristic admission from a manager who prefers to play his cards close to his chest on transfer matters but it would appear his hopes of landing either teenager are slim anyway.

Despite reported interest from both Liverpool and Everton, Tottenham Hotspur are expected to add 18-year-old Barnes to their increasingly crowded stable of young English talent before the transfer window closes at the end of January.

And there are contradictory reports about the future of 17-year-old Bale, the youngest player to be capped by Wales. A reported £7m price tag has done nothing to dissuade Tottenham, Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool from keeping close tabs on the set-piece specialist and there are even reports Spanish giants Real Madrid have been sending their scouts to St Mary's Stadium.

Having seen fellow academy product Theo Walcott leave the south coast this time last year for a seat on the Arsenal substitutes bench, Bale has played down talk of him leaving in the coming weeks. "There is a lot to be said for playing week-in, week-out in the Championship as I have been doing," he said. "I am loving it and it would be nice to think I can make it into the top flight with Southampton next season."

Saints boss George Burley has not wavered from his view that the club is under no pressure to sell and, as long as the player sticks to his official line, he could get his way.

The Scot is, however, keen to strengthen his midfield this month with Andrew Surman, Djamel Belmadi and Nathan Dyer all injured, and it remains to be seen if there are any funds available for him to do so without first selling.

If Bale were to leave, Newcastle could turn out to be front-runners. Wary of the experience of players like Walcott and Shaun Wright-Phillips, the left-back would apparently prefer to move to a club where he would have less chance of silverware but more chance of regular first-team football - and Newcastle is believed to be his first choice.

But if giants like Real Madrid and Manchester United match their interest with bids, it would take a strong-minded player to refuse the opportunity.

If the Magpies miss out on Bale and Barnes then the more experienced Matthew Upson would appear to represent their best chance of a Championship signing.

The 27-year-old England international could play against Newcastle in Saturday's FA Cup third round tie. But despite Birmingham City's insistence they do not want to sell the centre-back, whose St Andrew's contract expires at the end of the season, they may bow to the inevitable and rest the former Arsenal player rather than risk his value dropping because he is cup-tied.

Upson has not wavered in his desire to leave the Midlands club, rejecting a new improved deal at a time when he was recovering from a broken leg and the Blues had just been relegated from the Premier League.

As an experienced and talented centre-back, but not one on the later stages of his career, Upson fits the profile of the kind of player Glenn Roeder wants to bring to Tyneside.

Newcastle took on Premiership leaders Manchester United on New Year's Day with only one fit senior defender in Steven Taylor. They had to send Titus Bramble home yesterday when the centre-back arrived for a light training session suffering from flu.

The former Ipswich Town player has been sidelined since November with a calf injury.

If ManU of Chelsea got him, I'd be pretty excited about our chances of going for Bridge or Heinze - both of whom are quality and established in the premiership. Either of those would be a superb aquisition.
